FLOWER WORK WAS WRECKED

-

IAN Wilkinson, chair of the group ‘Friends of Memorial Park’ (FOMP) mentions in Observer Club News (June 9, page 27) that on Saturday last community-minded volunteers affiliated to FOMP gave up a couple of hours of their time to fully plant two large flower beds with marigolds.

This activity, funded by the group has been necessary as due to budget restraints HBC have prioritised their spending in other directions.

One can imagine the frustrations of all concerned when within a couple of hours a reckless dog owner allowed his pet to run amok among the newly planted beds destroying some of the flowers.

When confronted and challenged about his lack of control of the dog, the owner was downright rude and unrepentant.

While I accept that the vast majority of dog owners are responsible individuals, in my humble opinion HBC should at the next review of the Public Space Protection Order 2015 seriously consider imposing a condition that all dogs in public parks be kept on a lead at all times.

I am sure we all realise that it is the owners – not the dogs – that need educating. Jim Oldcorn Ridgeway Great Harwood
