Forces Day shows support for our armed services
SERVICEMEN and women gathered in Accrington to mark Armed Forces Day.
Members of the Royal British Legion, dignitaries, residents and shoppers took part in a service outside the Town Hall as part of the national celebrations to show support for the work of men and women in the armed forces.
Speeches were made by Deputy Lieutenant Christine Kirk and Hyndburn deputy mayor Coun Mohammad Ayub before prayers were read by Rev Ian Enticott.
The Armed Forces Day flag was raised to the bugle call of Reveille played by Tommy Fox.
It was flown at halfmast as a mark of respect to those who were killed or affected by the Grenfell Tower fire and Mosque attack in London.
Trevor Dawson, of the Royal British Legion, then read the Armed Forces Day Recitation before dismissing the parade.
Coun Ayub said Armed Forces Day is important to ‘show support to military personnel past, present and future’.
He told the crowd: “Too often their bravery is not fully appreciated. Armed Forces Day brings that to the forefront and highlights the contribution they are making.”
