FLORENCE Josephine Pollard, of Clayton-leMoors and formerly of Oswaldtwis­tle, died peacefully in hospital surrounded by her loving family and fortified by the Rites of the Holy Mother Church, on Tuesday, July 18, aged 85.

She was the devoted and much loved wife of Albert, loving mum of Stephen, dear sister of Margaret, and also a much loved auntie and friend to many.

Florence worked at Luptons and then later as a care assistant at Woodlands Care Home in Clayton-le-Moors.

She was born in Cartron, Killasser, Co. Mayo.

One of nine children, she moved to England with her family at the age of 13.

Florence met Albert on the train, on the way home from Blackburn, after a night out at Tony’s dance hall.

Florence was a very caring lady who always put others before herself. She was a devoted mum who dedicated all her time to her son Stephen.

Nonetheles­s, she still found time to look after nephews and nieces, as well as providing support for those around her.

Florence - so dearly loved, so sadly missed.

Florence’s funeral service will take place at St Mary’s RC Church, Clayton-le-Moors on Thursday, August 10 at 12noon followed by committal at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 1pm. Flowers welcome to the Chapel of Rest.

JOHN BROADLEY

MR John Armstrong Broadley, of Church Bank, Church, died on Friday, July 14, aged 80.

John was a maintenanc­e engineer at Lucas Burnley, then worked at Altham Primary School as site supervisor.

He was councillor of Church ward and also Mayor in 2012.

He attended St James Church, Kirk, all his life.

He was a school governor and a member of Ynot Aspire, Paul Hunter Foundation, NLTG (North Lancashire Training Group), Prospects Foundation, New Era Choir, Tuesday Friends, Friends in Unison and other charitable groups and community programmes.

He leaves his wife Mrs Jean Broadley, son Andrew Broadley, daughters Cheryl Whittaker and Nicola Nolan, sons-in-law Ken and Mark, daughter-inlaw Susan, nine grandchild­ren and six great-grandchild­ren.

His funeral service, conducted by the Rev N. A. Ashton, will be held at 1.45pm on Monday, July 31, at St Mary Magdalen, Accrington. This will be followed by his cremation at 3pm at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

FRANCIS WALMSLEY

MR Francis Walmsley, of Holly Bank, Hollins Lane, died on Thursday, July 20, aged 83.

He was a teacher and retired from Moorhead High School, Accrington, where he was Head of English.

He died after a long illness at Springhill Nursing Home. He was born in Low Moor, Clitheroe, and attended St Michael and John’s Primary School and St Mary’s College, Blackburn.

He was employed at Howard and Bullough and then at Mullards Blackburn where he was appointed to the senior staff. After training at Lancaster University, he graduated in English Literature and taught at Shadsworth School, Blackburn, and later at Moorhead High School, Accrington, where he was Head of Department.

His hobbies were fell walking, travelling and studying Latin. He was a member of the Latin Mass Society.

He was a supporter of Blackburn Rovers and will be so missed by many friends and colleagues.

He leaves his wife Dorothy to whom he was married for 62 years, children Catherine, Eileen and John, grandchild­ren Matthew, Ruth, Simon, Dominic and Jack and great-grandchild Eleanor.

His funeral service, conducted by Father Stamp and Father Wright, will be held at St Ann’s Church, Cobham Road, on Friday, July 28 at 10am, followed by burial at Dill Hall Cemetery at 11.30am.

Funeral director: Hyndburn Funeral Services, Queens Road. MR Clifford James Maden, of Westcliffe, Great Harwood, died on Wednesday, July 19, aged 82.

He was a chartered accountant at Prestige Group, Burnley.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing and walking in Switzerlan­d and The Isle of Skye.

He leaves his loving wife Barbara Maden and was a very dear uncle.

His funeral service, conducted by David Ireland, followed by cremation, will be held on Tuesday, August 1 at 12.20pm at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

FREDERICK ATKINSON

A WELL known figure in local business circles, Mr Fred Atkinson died on Friday, July 21, aged 90.

Mr Atkinson, of Stopford Court, Claytonle-Moors started work at J.W. Bridge Ltd as an apprentice in the ironmonger­y trade and completed his working years at Lancashire Ironmonger­y of Warner Street, Accrington.

He spent 17 years in Australia working for a large steel manufactur­ing company, reaching a senior management position before returning to the UK in 1973.

During the war, he served in the East Lancashire Regt and the Military Police where he reached the rank of Sergeant, serving in Germany and throughout Western Europe.

On release from the forces he secured a degree in Business Management in his spare time.

He loved writing short stories and crosswords and enjoyed both cricket and soccer.

A family man, he was married to Margaret for 68 years and was the father of Philip, Judith and Stephen, with 11 grandchild­ren and 19 great-grandchild­ren.

A lifelong Catholic, he attended St Mary’s Church, Clayton-leMoors.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, August 3 with Requiem Mass in St Mary’s RC Church, Clayton-le-Moors at 10am, followed by burial at Dill Hall Cemetery at 11.30am. Family flowers only. Masses offerings please.

AUGUSTINE CHAPMAN

MR Augustine Joseph Chapman, of Wellfield Care Home and formerly of Askrigg Close, died on Friday, July 21, aged 90.

Austin, as he was known, had a variety of jobs in his younger days before becoming a telephone operator at the Department of Employment, Melbourne House, Accrington.

Austin enjoyed walking in the countrysid­e with his border collie both at home and on his many motorhome holidays with his wife Rita.

They would visit the lovely parts of England including sheepdog trials and old churches.

He was the husband of his late wife Rita and had a late daughter Carole. He leaves his son John.

His funeral service, conducted by Philip Norris, will be held on Tuesday, August 1 at 2.40pm at Accrington Crematoriu­m.
