Music introduces ethereal steel

- YVONNE ROBINS

HAWORTH Art Gallery has a real treat for lovers of unusual musical instruments and sound on Sunday, August 6, at 2pm when we will be hosting a free concert performed by handpan musician, Kim Metcalf.

The handpan or ‘Hang’ is a convex steel drum played with the hands and tuned with multiple notes.

It was officially presented to the public in 2001 in Frankfurt, Germany and instantly the instruments became popular for their beautiful and mysterious tone and unique scales.

Kim, a frustrated musician for years, who was writing melodies in her head but unable to find ‘her’ instrument, stumbled upon two buskers playing the Hang in Edinburgh in 2009 and instantly fell in love!

She began her relationship with this instrument and the wonderful handpan community of players and builders by learning the complexities of playing the instrument to achieve her desired sound. She now plays and writes her own music using these rare and ethereal steely wonders and has found her creative voice.

Kim invites you to her concert on August 6, when she hopes you enjoy her journey as she ‘plays the space’ with her tuned ‘UFOs’.

This is a free concert and all donations go direct to the performers. Drinks and refreshments maybe purchased from the Gallery Kitchen bar.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday noon to 4.45pm, Saturday, Sunday noon to 4.15pm, closed all day Monday, free entrance and parking.
