Signing new contract was ‘no-brainer’

MARK Hughes insists it was an easy decision to make after signing a new contract at Accrington Stanley.

The 30-year-old has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal at the Wham Stadium, with the option of a further year.

He is the latest Accrington player to commit his future to the club, alongside the likes of Seamus Conneely, Janoi Donacien, Jordan Clark and Sean McConville.

Hughes is excited for the future with Stanley, and is confident that the team can achieve success this season.

“Towards the end of last season the gaffer told me he wanted me to stay for another year and for me it was a no brainer to sign,” he told the club’s official website.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here and played some of my best football over the last couple of years, it’s a friendly club from top to bottom, the chairman’s fantastic and it’s great to be part of a club like this.

“We’ve got a strong core of players here and hopefully we can kick on from last season. It’s been a tough pre-season but I’ve enjoyed it and we’re all looking towards getting promoted, we know that we’ve got a squad good enough to achieve it.”

Hughes first arrived at Stanley back in 2016 after signing from Stevenage, and went on to make 44 appearances for the Reds in all competitions last season.

He is expected to be in the starting line-up for the home game against Colchester
