FAMILY’S dog mauled to death in front of 10-year-old boy. Police said the attack by two other dogs caused the child ‘a lot of distress’ (website and page 3)

Lesley Wharton:

This is a heartbreaking story. Worst case scenario. My dog is my best friend. I have a 10-year-old grandchild, all concerned must be traumatized.

Nicola Butterworth:

Absolutely disgraceful – the poor dog and its family. Where is the owner of the two dogs? Not got the decency to come forward?

Absolutely disgusting. This poor family. I hope the person responsible gets caught quickly and handed the appropriate punishment

This is terrible, must have been horrific. Poor buddy, hope they find the owner of those dogs.

That poor child and doggie. Heartbreaking

Kirsty Barr: Maxine Wallbank: Heidi Atheis: Louise Hartley:

Hope this owner is caught. Makes my blood boil!

Emma Emjaja Sydenham:

This is such a sad story, breaks my heart. R.I.P. Buddy.

Paula Khan:

Aw, poor family. Bless.

DISTRAUGHT owner calls for action after four cats die on same road. Darren Whewell’s family has lost a string of pets on Lowergate Road (website and Observer, August 11)

Elaine Walker:

It’s a terrible shame. Those poor cats. I feel so sorry for the owner but cats have to go outside, just like dogs have to go outside. And we don’t have that much countryside left around here and with the amount of traffic on the roads these days, no wonder – it’s like it is. Very, very sad indeed.

We have absolutely LOADS of beautiful countryside , right on our doorstep, it’s the one thing that makes me grateful to be in the

Sarah Alexis Clark:

area at times.

Debbie Rogerson:

I have to disagree. I don’t think they do need to go outside. Cats are very domesticated in this day and age and adapt very well to being indoors. My cat is 19 and at the vet’s recommendation he has not been out for 17 years. And he’s had a long, safe spoilt life. But I understand not everyone will see my point of view.

Speed bumps to save cats? Taxpayers should not be expected to pay!

Marilyn Parker: Amy Chambers:

I think the point is that it could be a child next – so taxpayers’ money would be well spent in my eyes?

Madeleine Ramonde:

The point is that it could be a child next and the child would definitely be killed being hit at the silly speed people drive up and down there at. I walk up and down this road every day and there’s very few people that take notice of the speed limit. Cats have very quick reactions compared to humans. So, yes, if numerous cats are being killed on one small stretch of road then it’s something that needs to be addressed. It’s the road that 99 per cent of the school children use every morning and afternoon. Speed bumps are needed – and potentially saving children’s lives isn’t a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Debbie Rogerson:

Poor cats, it breaks my heart hearing these stories. I don’t mean to sound disrespectful but if the road is so dangerous why keep getting cats and letting them out? The outside world is not a safe place to let cats just roam the streets anymore. Too many cars at excessive speeds and it’s not just cars that are a danger to them either!

Such a shame, but my cat is free to roam around Eastgate; which is arguably a much busier and often faster road and yet thankfully she has managed to

Alan Smithee:

survive the last 16 years – so perhaps speed is not the problem.

Mike Booth:

I had two cats run over on my street. I stopped having cats.

Nathan Nay Slater:

That’s being done for all the native wildlife killed by pet cats every night. If you live in a built-up area, then these are the risks unfortunately.

James Houghton:

What wildlife? Rats and mice? My heart bleeds...

MORE than 1,000 residents oppose £2m Higham’s fields sports hub – councillor claims. UKIP’s Malcolm Pritchard has called a public meeting next week over the Accrington Stanley Community Trust plan (website and Observer August 11)

Pat Mcginley:

With the Labour HBC. you will be lucky if they take any notice of any petition. In my town of Great Harwood, we got 1,570 people to write and complain/petition against the selling off of our Lyndon Playing Fields to build over 200 unwanted houses. At least it is nice to see one councillor support his community. In Harwood, none of our five Labour councillors supported us in any way. They did not even attend the planning meeting. Good luck, but this Labour group are happy to sell off all and any crown jewels. Disgraceful.

Tony Singleton:

Keep it open for what so it can carry on being ripped up by the clowns on quad bikes doing doughnuts, inconsiderate people who turn up because it’s sunny and leave their mess everywhere – even though there’s bins – and a getting bigger minority not picking up after their dogs. It’s a joke. Don’t get me wrong, I would like to see it stay open to the public. Rant over

Andy Clegg:

You could ask Theresa May to stop cutting council budgets then local councils could afford to maintain these public spaces.

COUPLE who spent honeymoon hiding from air raids reach 75th anniversary. Henry and Joyce Hodgson celebrated with champagne at Springhill Care Home, where they live together (website and Observer 11)

Maureen Domanski:

Congratulations Harry and Joyce, you both look fantastic. Lots of love.
