AWEEKEND of fun for good causes in the borough is in store with two charity events taking place.

The Great Harwood Civic Society’s annual charity fair will take over the town’s square on the morning of Saturday, August 19 with stalls from a range of local faith, voluntary and community groups.

And on the same day across the borough in Accrington a free family fun day will take place in the town centre to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, organised by What’s On In Lancashire.

People are also being urged to sign up for a charity headshave to donate their hair to the Little Princess Trust, which is set to take place in Accrington Market Hall at 12noon.

The event is free and is open to anyone and everyone of all ages.

During the rest of the fun day, planned to run from 11am until 4.30pm, there will be face painting, a bouncy castle, stalls and an appearance from Frozen’s Queen Elsa.

The Great Harwood Civic Society event, which has been running for more than 20 years, is scheduled to run from 10am until 12.30pm.

There will be a wide variety of goods to buy, several tombolas and an assortment of games for the children including Whack the Rat and organisations including Accrington Lions, the East Lancashire Hospice, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley RNLI, Great Harwood churches and scouts will have stalls.

Peter Holden, civic society president, said their traditional event will help raise funds for the organisations and at the same time raise awareness of the valuable work they do in the community.

He said: “If we could get a couple of hundred people coming around the fair on the Saturday morning that would be good.

“The fact that it’s all being done by good causes unlike a normal fair, it does encourage people to come out and support these voluntary organisations.

“With other stuff going as well in Accrington people could make a day of it.”

He added: “It’s one of those things, along with our horticultural show, that we take great pride in that we are able to provide it for the locality.

“If each of these stalls raises £100 each then they’ll be happy. Come along, have a look what’s there and enjoy yourself.”

Great Harwood Civic Society has also announced tha the annual ‘crying of the fair’ will be proclaimed on St Lawrence Day - Monday, August 21.

The event maintains a tradition which started back in 1338.

The historic event will be celebrated with the Town Crier at 9am on the Towngate.
