Whole new ball game for cricket club

-

TWO football teams are shown in this week’s Looking Back.

An Accrington Cricket Club XI switched sports to battle it out against Highams FC in a match in the 1960s.

The teams were captured for posterity by former Accrington Observer photographer Garth Dawson.

The Highams team (in the dark shirts) included (back row) K Foster, K Brown, R Butterworth, F Ryan, R Harwood and D Pickersgill with the referee Mr N Ashton, (front row) N Blackburn, P Kenyon, P Tomlinson, P O’Meara and K Bale.

The Accrington CC XI (in the white shirts) was made up of (back row) A Farrell, J McLean, A Singleton, R Watmough, A Richardson and P Fenwick, (front row) B Rutter, J Foulkes, A Worswick, R Cuddihy and J Collier.

There were bargains galore to be had at the Accrington Liberal Party autumn fair which was opened by parliamentary Liberal candidate Julian Gould.

The event raised around £52 for party funds.

Our final photograph this week shows beat group The Onlookers.

The band featured 15-year-old singing twins Barry and Susan Dickinson from Clayton-leMoors.

The group practised regularly at the Atlas Street Baptist Church.

They made their first public appearance at a talent competition in Haslingden.

The line-up was completed by drummer Brian Robinson, 17, from Clayton-le-Moors, 13-year-old Peter Thomas on rhythm guitar and Andrew Kirk, 14, on lead guitar, both of whom came from Accrington.

The group’s manager was Rennie Pinder, 17, from Altham, and their transport manager was Alan Ormerod, 19, from Clayton-le-Moors.
