BERNARD BURKE

MR Bernard Burke died peacefully at his home in Oswaldtwis­tle on Monday, August 14, aged 70.

A much loved brother of Sheila and Stuart, he was loved uncle of Leesa and Lindsey, a dear cousin of Josie and a dear friend to many.

Bernard worked as a welder for Millercare, Escalator and Elevator in Accrington and then worked as a school caretaker at several schools.

He was an avid birdwatche­r and loved all types of birds.

He had every bird and animal book going and loved anything to do with nature.

He spent many happy hours at the local nature reserve in Oswaldtwis­tle and even worked as a volunteer there. No matter where he was, he always had a pair of binoculars to hand. He also enjoyed watching nature programmes and war documentar­ies on TV.

Bernard also liked to smoke and enjoyed a drink in the pubs in Oswaldtwis­tle.

He was also a wellknown face in Trickys on Thwaites Road.

Despite suffering with ill health for the last ten years, Bernard remained a very charming, popular and kind-hearted person who loved to keep up to date with his nieces.

Bernard’s funeral service and interment will take place on Friday, August 25 at the graveside at Dill Hall Cemetery, Clayton-le-Moors at 11am.

ELSIE SANDERSON

MRS Elsie Sanderson, of Addison Court Nursing/ Residentia­l Home, Accrington, died on Saturday, August 12, aged 85.

Before retirement, she worked as a cinema usherette, a bus conductres­s and in light engineerin­g.

Elsie liked to travel, especially to Canada.

She leaves Hazel and Tony and family, Kevin and Sally and family, Peter and Janet Oliver, Christine and John, Susan and Steve and family, Jean Kenny and family, Brenda and Terry, Brian Tatterstal­l and family, Robert and Laura and family, Sheila and Stephen and family, Janet and Phil, Jim and Christine and family, Joyce Thompson and Sheila and Roy and family.

The family of the late Elsie Sanderson would like to pass on to the manager and all the nursing and care staff of Addison Court Nursing/ Residentia­l Home, their sincere thanks for all the care that has been given to Elsie. Thank you for all the love and patience that you have shown throughout her stay with you. It was of a high standard and we all appreciate your efforts.

Her funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 29, at 10am at St John’s Accrington, conducted by the Reverend Gerald Higham, followed by cremation at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 11am. Family flowers only please.

Funeral director: Wolstensho­lmes Funeral Service. MR Thomas Mayor, of Charter Brook, Great Harwood, sadly passed away on Tuesday, August 15, aged 104.

The dearly beloved husband of his wife Frances and much loved father of son Rodney, he will be dearly missed by all the family and friends.

Tom, as he was known, worked as a textile overlooker in various cotton mills in the area and was treasurer of the District Loom Overlooker­s for more than 20 years, also serving as secretary.

Tom was a active member in the Great Harwood church community and was senior Scout Master and Cub leader in his younger days.

He lived life to the full and did not waste any time, he was a good baker making all sorts of lovely edibles.

He used the computer in a very wise way but liked puzzles, crosswords and codes.

His family said life with him was unforgetta­ble and they are thankful for their lives together.

A celebratio­n of Tom’s life will be held on Thursday, August 31 at Trinity Church URC, King Street, Great Harwood, at 12.15pm, conducted by the Rev. Geoffrey Hays, and all are welcome.

No flowers by request please but donations in memory of Tom may be made to East Lancashire Hospice via Great Harwood Funeral service.
