FUNDRAISERS braved showers and gusty winds to attend the Great Harwood Civic Society’s annual fair at the Towngate.

Peter Holder, chairman of the society, said the disappointing weather probably contributed to lower than average footfall at the event on Saturday, August 19. But he added: “In spite of this the voluntary groups raised some money for their organisa- tions as well as taking the opportunity to make those visiting aware of the good work that is done locally.”

Town crier Rawden Kerr then led the annual ‘Crying of the Fair’ ceremony on Monday, August 21, which dates back to 1338 when Edward III granted Charter rights to the town.

And green-fingered residents are being invited to attend the Civic Society’s horticultural show at St Wulstan’s School on Saturday, September 2, at 2pm.

As well as the usual flower and vegetable sections, the event will also include floral art, baking, knitting, handicraft, photography, painting and children’s sections. Entry forms are available at the library, Churchfield House, Bank Mill House and local churches.

POLICE moved to reassure residents after a ‘large plume of smoke’ was seen coming from a scrap yard.

Officers reported an ‘ongoing’ fire at the TH Smith and Sons site on Meadow Street in Great Harwood on Sunday, August 20.

Lancashire Police confirmed they were called in the early hours after concerns were raised by residents of ‘large plumes of smoke’ coming from the scrap yard.

A spokesperson said: “We were called just before 1am by the fire service. They had been contacted by a member of the public saying there was a large plume of smoke coming from the scrap yard on Meadow Street in Great Harwood. We didn’t really have much more involvement with it apart from being made aware, and it was about whether a decision was needed in terms of any police response.

“It was just left as it was.”

At the time the smoke was reported, a Hyndburn police spokesperson said: “We appreciate that this is a concern for people and are currently in liaison with the fire service and the environment agency to deal with this matter.

“There isn’t believed to be any immediate risk to nearby residents.”

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said there were ‘aware’ of the fire but no fire engines were called to the scrap yard.
