Shock and joy for duo top of class

-

HOLLINS Technology College saw a rate of 56 per cent of pupils achieving a standard pass (grade 4 or above) in both English and maths.

Seona Bailey was the top performing girl student at Hollins with a 9 in maths and five A*s.

She said: “I’m very happy and really shocked. I started crying when I found out that I got a 9. I was hoping to get 7s so to get a 9 is the best thing I could imagine.

“They were really hard exams and maths was really difficult with questions that I didn’t expect. I’ve been very anxious over the last week.”

Seona, from Accrington, will now study maths, chemistry, biology and physics at St Christopher’s High School in Accrington.

Coby Bolton, from Accrington, was the top performing boy student at Hollins.

He said: “I was one of only three in school to get a 9 and the only one to get a 9 in English literature.

“I did not expect this in the slightest, to be honest. I came in today thinking ‘right, that’s what you’ve got, deal with it and if you fail you fail’.

“When I was opening the results all my teachers were looking at me smiling. I thought they were setting me up!”

Coby will now study A-Levels in sociology, psychology, law and English and Burnley College.

Awais Ali, from Clayton- le-Moors, gained an A* and four As and will now study government and politics and patisserie and confectionery at Blackburn College.

He said: “I’m just relieved that I passed maths. The results were a lot better than I expected. I also didn’t think I would get an A in science.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here. It’s been really good and we’ve had great support from all the teachers.”

Megan Adshead, from Oswaldtwistle, achieved a 9 in English language and four As.

She said: “I just cried when I saw that I got a 9. I thought I was going to struggle with English so that was a bit of a surprise. I’m really pleased with my results overall and they were better than I was expecting.”

Megan will now study A-Levels in media, photography, European history and geography at Runshaw College.

Mollie-Jane Downham achieved A*s in religious studies and food technology and three As.

She will now study A-Levels in history, geography and English language at St Christopher’s High School.

She said: “They are better results that I expected. I’m really happy with my French result as it’s higher than I was predicted. They were difficult exams, particularly maths.”

Jennifer Lochrie, from Hapton, achieved three 7s, A*s in religious educa- tion and food technology, three As and a C.

She said: “I’m very happy and proud to be one of the top five pupils in the year. It’s been a really nervous time. I’ve just put it to the back of my mind.”
