Last-gasp strike dream come true for Wilks

-

ACCRINGTON Stanley forward Mallik Wilks says he has achieved a lifelong dream after scoring on his debut to rescue a point for his side during the 2-2 draw with Notts County.

The 18-year-old netted in the fifth minute of stoppage time at Meadow Lane last Friday to ensure that 10-man Stanley took a share of the spoils in the match.

Wilks was delighted to score a crucial goal, and revealed that he has always had ambitions to score on his debut for a club.

“It’s a dream come true. It’s every boy’s dream to do that on their debut and I’ve come on and managed it,” he said. “The boss put me on as a wing back and just told me to get up there and get at their full backs because they were tiring.

“That’s what I did and I arrived in the box, the ball just sat up nicely for me at the back post and thankfully I put it away.”

Wilks had only been at Stanley for one day before coming off the bench to score against Notts County, and he admits it was a whirlwind of emotions.

“It’s been a crazy 24 hours for me. I signed on Friday and met all of the lads for the first time,” he said. “I’ve had one training session here so to come on in such a big game and score the equaliser is an amazing feeling. I said I was here to score goals and I hope I can get more and help to keep the team at the top of the table. The fans were amazing. I was so happy to celebrate my goal in front of them, it’s a really big family here and they created a great atmosphere for us.”
