ACCRINGTON ARTHRITIS CARE

-

THE Accrington Arthritis Care group met for their monthly meeting at the Poplar Club.

Supper was served at the start and the entertainers were ‘Go on Tour’ an over sixties theatre group who are all unpaid volunteers from Blackburn.

The lively group brought along their technical crew, Mandy the artistic director, dancers and singers and a compere who had lots of jokes to tell.

The group put on a great show and the routines were entertaining with bright costume changes.

In between there were solo artists and a new tenor who was a great singer of ballads.

The show lasted an hour with the ladies tapping and singing and the audience joined in with familiar tunes.

Everyone enjoyed the evening meal, which ended with a raffle.

The group were thanked by Peter Hopwood.

ROTARY CLUB OF CHURCH AND OSWALDTWISTLE

YET Another Bowling Trophy For Church And Oswaldtwistle Rotary

The Rotary clubs in the south east of Lancashire compete in the annual doubles crown green knockout competition which is organised by Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary.

The knockout rounds were held in early August with the semi-final and final held recently, played on the same night on the bowling green adjacent to the Globe Club in Accrington.

Roland Hailwood and Sandy Morrison from the Clitheroe Rotary went down to the eventual champions from Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary, despite putting up a great fight in a very tight match, and not having the ‘rub’ of the green.

Winners Mike Hindle and Stuart Duhan played Paul Carlton and Richard Dugdale, representing Ribblesdale Rotary, in the final. Paul and Richard could not get the better of the Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary duo, who were the winners of the trophy for the second year running.

Both Clitheroe and Ribblesdale were at a disadvantage as they were playing on the ‘home’ green of Church and Oswaldtwistle.

This event is organised by Mike Hindle, who is the sports officer for the winning club, and he paid tribute to all the Rotary clubs who entered this competition, saying that: “In getting most of the Rotary clubs in the south east to take part in this doubles knockout is very encouraging.

“Without doubt it has been a success and it is an opportunity to meet up with fellow Rotarians and enjoy friendly ‘banter’ despite competing to win.

“After the completion of the games players retire to the bar for a welcome drink, pie and peas and, of course, much conviviality.”

The trophy was presented by Rotarian Roland Hailwood to the winners.

Roland is a long standing Rotarian from the Clitheroe club who is a tireless worker for the Rotary organisation, and a great friend with the members of Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary.

Both events where well attended and they complete what has been another successful year of club shows.

This does not mean that our club events have finished also, we still have plenty to do at our regular meetings.

Our next club event is on Tuesday, September 12, at Hippings Vale Community Centre.

We start at 7.30pm and it will be a talk and display by members on trees they have in their collection.

We also have an extra meeting on Monday, September 25, for those who want that bit more guidance with their trees.

There are plenty more things to look forward to this year, making our own pots and a special guest speaker to mention just two reasons why you should come along.

We have refreshments and our raffle, easy parking and entrance so you have no excuse not to be there.

ACCRINGTON FLOWER AND GARDEN CLUB

IT was an evening of mixed emotions at Accrington Flower and Garden Club’s monthly meeting as it was the final meeting of the club after almost 49 years.

Due to falling numbers in membership and increasing costs to run the club, the committee were unable to carry on and had to make the difficult decision to close.

Members were given an excellent demonstration by Karen Schofield from Preston, who was welcomed by chairman Anne Kirman.

Karen related many interesting stories and used beautiful flowers and foliage to make numerous designs.

Included in the flowers were various roses, lilies, chrysanthemums, gladioli, carnations and anthuriums.

The chairman thanked the demonstrator and gave a special thank you to the loyal members who had supported the club in its final months, allowing it to carry on into the late summer.

At the close of the evening the designs were raffled and refreshments were served.

ACCRINGTON DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB

AUDREY Fletcher welcomed John Livesey back from his recent visit to the BRI.

She was also able to give us encouraging news of Keith McChrystal, who was on the same ward.

All members endorsed her best wishes to both for a full recovery.

The meeting is always very well attended for any talk by Pat Osborne, a gifted storyteller, whose services we have regularly called upon and who never disappoints.

The latest subject was Tutankhamun and we were treated to the context and story of this boy who died at the age of 19, having ruled for just 10 years but who is arguably better known and who has probably had more written about him than the combined kings and pharaohs who proceeded and followed him.

All this after the efforts to erase him, his wife and even his father from the history of Egypt by those who took power on his demise. Controversy still rages, did he fall or was he pushed?

Had Egypt really suffered economically under the rule of Akhenaten and now his son or is this just a case of whoever wins gets to write the history?

How did Aye, Tut’s first minister, get away with marrying his widow and sister Ankhesanamen and then rapidly replacing her with Tiye? Is this the serial killer? How did Tut’s tomb survive untouched for 3,000 years, full of treasure, when grave robbing was a major industry?

Are there really more, yet to be investigated, chambers in this tomb?

Lots to get our minds around and probably safe to predict a few more hits on Google’s Egyptology sites.

The story was compellingly related by Pat Osborne, who was sincerely thanked on behalf of the club by Cyril Hirst, in his own inimitable style.
