Social evenings in the picture

-

GUESTS at an Accrington Fire Station social evening are shown in this week’s top picture.

About 300 people attended the party in the 1960s, including firemen, their friends and relatives, and were snapped for the Observer.

Local firemen sub-officer J Spencer and leading fireman K Slevin were also honoured with awards from the RSPCA, , right.

More than 70 employees and friends enjoyed a social and dinner dance at Pendle Hotel in Chatburn, below.

The event was arranged by the newly-formed Sports and Social Club of the CWS Society, based at Hambledon Mill in Accrington.

Our final photograph this week shows members of the St Mary’sy Amateurs drama group performing the ‘Merrie England’ opera, below right.

It was staged at Oswaldtwistle Town Hall and featured Ann Lovett as the May Queen, brothers Tom and John Henry as Long Tom and Big Ben, Stella Wilson as Bessie Throckmorton, Leslie Rushton as Raleigh and Tony Flanagan as the Earl of Essex.
