MR Ronald Hadfield, of Manor Street, Accrington, died on Friday, September 1, aged 89.

Ron retired from the manufactur­ing industry where he was a engineer and technical draftsman, general manager of The Accrington Brush Company.

He enjoyed mending watches and cameras.

He leaves his dearly beloved wife Bernadette, was the loved father of the late Peter, and also dad to Kath and Dee, father-inlaw of Andy and Michael, and a dearly loved grandad to Lysette, Adam, Josef and Jed.

A service will be held at Accrington Crematoriu­m, on Friday, September 15 at 3pm, conducted by Rev Philip Norris.

MARGARET LYNCH

MARGARET Lynch nee Macintosh, of Lupin Close, Accrington, died peacefully in hospital on Monday, September 4, aged 85.

She was daughter of the late James Edward and Ethel Macintosh, and sister of the late Alan.

During her life Margaret was a hard worker and had a varied career over the years. She has worked for Hyndburn Park School in Accrington, Blake Vitrious Enamel in Clayton-le-Moors, on the market at Accrington but most recently for Marks & Spencer in Accrington.

In her spare time she enjoyed reading, writing letters, spending time with her family and going to her local church.

She was a cherished member of St Mary Magdalen’s Church as well as St Peter’s in Accrington, and also a member of the Mother’s Union. She also volunteere­d as a pastoral auxiliary worker for the Blackburn Deanery.

Margaret sadly leaves her dearly loved husband Philip, her much loved sons Denzil and Stephen, their partners Michaela and Ann, her treasured grandchild­ren Barclay, Jennifer and Mark, her cherished greatgrand­children, her dear sister-in-law Pat and her many dear friends from St Mary Magdalen’s, St Peter’s, Marks & Spencer’s and her fellow pastoral assistants in the Deanery – God bless you all.

Her funeral service will take place at 1pm on Friday, September 15, at St Mary Magdalen’s Church, Accrington, prior to committal at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

JAMES BALDWIN MBE

MR James Baldwin, formerly of Fern Avenue, Oswaldtwis­tle, sadly passed away at Hope House, Clayton-le-Moors on Tuesday, September 5, aged 95.

Jim, as he was known, started his working life at the age of 14 for Spencer & Beattie Ltd, Springwork­s, where he remained for 47 years up until his retirement at the age of 61.

In the evenings and at the weekend, and more so during his retirement, Jim was a member of Rhyddings Methodist Church and the Accrington Male Voice Choir.

His real passion has always been singing, mostly in churches, and he was well known for the sound of his baritone voice, especially when performing in the local Amateur Operatic Society.

He also enjoyed listening to classical music.

For many years he was chairman of the Inskip League of Friendship, during which time he started Dial A Ride, covering Accrington and the surroundin­g districts. It was for this service that he was awarded an MBE, in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list in 1971.

Jim sadly leaves his dearly loving wife Margaret and his much loved children Malcolm, Alison and David.

He will be sadly missed by all his loving family and friends.

His funeral service will be held on Friday, September 15, at 11.40am, at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

MR Gerald Law, of Baxenden and formerly of Intack, died peacefully in hospital with his loving wife by his side, on Saturday, September 9, aged 91.

Bob, as he was known, was the devoted husband of Dorothy and also the late Marion, step-dad of Carolyn, and brother-inlaw of Audrey.

Bob worked as a baker throughout his working life. He ran his own bakers for many years and later worked for Warburtons.

In his spare time John enjoyed ballroom dancing, walking and gardening. He always kept his garden immaculate and blooming with colour.

Bob enjoyed his holidays, especially to Sweden to visit friends, and he loved to drive out to the Ribble Valley and dine out with Dorothy.

He was also a lifelong supporter of the Royal National Lifeboat Institutio­n.

Bob’s funeral service will take place at St John The Baptist Church, Baxenden on Wednesday, September 20, at 2pm, followed by committal at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 3pm.

ETHEL BRECKELL

MRS Ethel Breckell, of Woodlands Home, Clayton-le-Moors, died on Friday, September 8, aged 101.

Ethel started work aged 14 in the sewing industry at Highams Mill and later joined the mills owned by the Warburtons family.

She spent many years working at the mills before retiring to look after granddaugh­ter Sarah.

Ethel loved baking and sewing and was a member of Springhill Methodist Church.

Ethel was very fond of football and cricket and was an avid fan of her son Andrew’s football and cricketing career.

Wife of the late Albert, she leaves her beloved son Andrew and daughter-in-law Janet, dearly loved granddaugh­ter Sarah and her husband Anthony, and treasured greatgrand­children Isla and Ted. She was sister of Ruth and the late Charles and Sally, and a dear friend to many.

Her funeral service will take place on Thursday, September 21, at 10.20am, officiated by Rev Peter Cox, followed by cremation at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

JUDITH PARKER

MRS Judith Elaine Parker, of Woburn Close, Baxenden, died on Thursday, September 7, aged 50.

Judith worked for several years in the County Courts in Blackburn and for most of her working life at various local job centres. She loved walking her two Jack Russells, Crash and Libby.

She enjoyed watching football and was a season ticket holder at Blackburn Rovers. She also enjoyed playing golf along with her husband Hugh.

She loved her holidays in the Mediterran­ean but her favourite destinatio­n of all was the Algarve, Portugal, where she went twice a year for many years. Judith was the much loved wife of Hugh, devoted mother of Ainsleigh, Robert and Charlotte, precious grandma of Joshua, a dearly loved daughter of Rodney and Sylvia and a dear sister of John.

Her funeral will take place on Friday, September 15 at 10.20am, at Accrington Crematoriu­m, officiated by the minister David Ireland, followed by cremation.

HERBERT GAFFNEY

MR Herbert Leslie Gaffney, of Accrington, died on Saturday, September 9 at Church View Nursing Home.

Jimmy, as he was known, was a former labourer, building sewers.

A former member of Springhill Club, he liked going for a drink at Tinker & Budget.

He had an allotment and enjoyed gardening and loved his dogs.

He leaves wife Jean, and children Susan, David and Sandy, as well as eight sisters and two brothers.

His funeral will be held at 1.40pm on Wednesday, September 20 at Accrington Crematoriu­m, officiated by minister Mrs Sandra Howles.

EDITH DOWNES

MRS Edith Downes, of Highfield Hall Nursing Home, Haslingden, died on Wednesday, August 30, aged 94.

Born in Huncoat, she moved to Accrington when she married. Following her schooling, she became a weaver and worked at various mills, including Highams in Accrington for many years up to having her family.

Once they were grown up, she returned to part-time work at Rists Wires & Cables and lastly at Ray Lindon’s store, Accrington, from where she retired.

She was an avid reader - mainly of Agatha Christie - but loved all murder mystery novels.

She liked listening to music - especially Nat King Cole and Glenn Miller.

She enjoyed many holidays in Spain and Switzerlan­d and caravan holidays in Scarboroug­h and Fleetwood. She liked watching TV - especially the soaps - and any black and white movies.

Wife of the late Joseph, she was mother of Connie and the late Harold, grandma of Paul, Stephen, Caroline, Amanda and Gemma, and greatgrand­children Matilda and Venetia.

Her funeral followed by cremation was due to be held on Thursday, September 14 at 1.40pm at Accrington Crematoriu­m, officiated by Peter Cox. Family flowers welcome, with donations for Alzheimer’s Society c/o funeral director Hyndburn Funeral Services.

SARAH DUNCANSHOR­ROCK

SARAH Duncan– Shorrock, of Alice Street, Oswaldtwis­tle died on Friday, September 8, aged 64.

Sarah was a well known local teacher of music. In previous years she had been proprietor of the Manchester School of Music; run her own ensemble and contribute­d to the music of Blackburn Cathedral. She enjoyed spending time with her dog; meeting with friends and listening to music.

She leaves cousins Hazel and husband Barry; Alex and his wife Gillian and their children Sophia, Elijah and Oliver.

A service will be held at New Lane Immanuel Church at 11am on Thursday, September 21 followed by interment in the churchyard. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Sarah can be made to The British Heart Foundation c/o funeral director Kirby & Hughes, Blackburn Road, Accrington.
