COUNCILLORS defeat 2,000-strong petition to reopen town centre toilets as public back campaign to reopen Peel Street loos (website) Baz Almond: Labour councillor and paramedic Eamonn Higgins said the toilets had become a place for drug addicts to ‘get their fix’ and for people to carry out ‘lewd sexual acts’.

Oh, so in other words everyone else’s needs become irrelevant because of the acts of a very very small minority of people . John Holden: Hyndburn councillors don’t care about the ordinary people think, that’s been obvious for a long time. Valerie Edmondson: Why don’t they open the toilets with a full time person in attendance, whose job it would be to clean, look after and maintain the daily running of the toilets with two free loos for disabled and children and the rest for a nominal payment...say 5p? This was the norm many years ago and worked well. It would be employment for at least three to four people and serve the community in their time of toilet needs. The alternative will be: the community relieving themselves in times of desperation whenever and wherever. I am certain that the people of Hyndburn would be glad to pay 5p for a pee. It’s not rocket science...and before the council says that it will cost too much. Accrington needs loos and just for a matter of interest, where are the drug users and those doing lewd acts going to go? Back on the streets in public view and causing a danger and nuisance to the community. Hyndburn council ALWAYS seem to dissolve one problem and create others. Casee Malakian Leigh: Absolute Disgrace! Joanne JoJo Rogers: I hope if they do reopen they are cleaned properly because last time I went in to use them I walked straight back out because they were a disgrace. Stephen Mcloughlin: Won’t happen yet. The council are bogged down in paperwork and can’t even flush out a spokesperson. Alan Slater: Good effort people but I can’t see it happening sadly.

TOFS Clearance closed on Wednesday to restock after selling any three items for a fiver (website and Observer September 15) Laura Bailey: I work across the road and this store being closed has kept me highly amused watching everyone keep trying to get in when there’s signs on every door saying closed! Amanda Arbuthnot Taylor: I’ve had few nice things from here. Trespass snow boots for a fiver, lovely knitted skirt for £2 and very nice bikini for £10. Think it’s just luck if you go in at the right time you can pick up a bargain. Jade Lawson: I love this shop haha, only for shoes though. Lauren Killaway: Never even knew this shop existed, that’s how long I’ve not been down town for! Attia Abid Menash Farzana Gh Ahmed: That explains why it were closed today lol xx Farzana Gh Ahmed: Cleared the shelves? How is that possible crazy! Kirsty Tinydancer Taylor: You will be there tomorrow morning waiting at the doors the deals still on tomorrow lol xx Julie Broadhurst: Too right haha. Raymond Cockerill: Sounds like we missed out.

PICTURES: Hyndburn Museum moving to ‘bigger and better’ Arndale Centre unit. Iconic Father Time sculpture to take centre stage at the official opening (website and Observer September 15) Emma Riley: There must be a way to raise the amount of money to have it up and running again. The council can afford to spend millions on a path surely they could have that clock up and running again. Ryan Chelsea Wilson: I remember kicking off to hang around town until the scary lookin man came out of the clock. I loved it! Janice Curtis: Hated it. But art never appeals to everyone or it would be boring. Katharine McNamara: We have to go and visit this... Trevor Davies: The eyesore cost a fortune to put up, and again to pull down. Lauren Holden: It needs to come back. Might get some decent shops in town. And people visiting from out of town. Chantelle Clayton: Me and grandma used to always stop to watch it. I was only young but still remember it. Julie Broadhurst: I loved it and would love to see it back. Kerry Taylor: Used to love watching this xx Sheilia Hughes: It should still be there. Laura Booth: Oh my god yes! Used to freak me right out that thing.
