Ladies, bouquets and bell ringers...
MEMBERS of the Accrington Ladies Club are shown in this week’s top picture. It was submitted by club chairman Phyllis Spooner and was taken circa 1986.
Phyllis said the club is now in its 57th year and meets every Tuesday evening at the Blind Society on Bank Street in Accrington.
Our second picture was taken by former Observer photographer Garth Dawson in the 1970s and shows Rishton St Charles school headmistress, Margaret Sinfield, getting a surprise at an annual open night.
Miss Sinfield was presented with a huge bouquet of flowers and a silver trinket box to commemorate her 25 years as headmistress.
The tradition of ringing in the new year at St James’ Church in Accrington was continued despite several experienced ringers being unable to attend.
The team included Gordon Whewell, Raymond Helliwell, Elizabeth Helliwell, Nigel Grenwood, Elaine Benson, Kevin Wolstenholme, Karen Spencer, Carole Reid, Paul Chapman and Roger Leigh.
Our final photograph this week features mountain marathon challenge teenagers Christopher Cooke, Michael Bullcock, John Williamson and Roger Bracewell, who were aiming to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in under 24 hours.
