MRS Doris Mercer, of Hen­ley House, Whal­ley Road, died on Tues­day, Oc­to­ber 24, at Hen­ley House, peace­fully nursed by Nesta, aged 91.

She orig­i­nally trained as a silk weaver at Broadoak Mills.

Af­ter bring­ing up a fam­ily and re­cov­er­ing from se­ri­ous ill­ness, she worked part time for a num­ber of lo­cal busi­nesses. She had a long pe­riod with Lu­cas Rists Wires and Ca­bles, a brief spell with Hol­land’s Pies, fi­nally end­ing as a cleaner at a print­ing com­pany in Church.

Af­ter re­tire­ment she helped to run a knit­ting club with her best friend at the Bap­tist Church, Whal­ley Road, that ex­hib­ited and also raised money for lo­cal char­i­ties.

She en­joyed swim­ming to keep fit. She was a keen ma­chine knit­ter, orig­i­nally shar­ing a ma­chine with her sis­ter-in-law, even­tu­ally with her own ma­chines, she made many of her own clothes.

She ac­com­pa­nied her hus­band to reg­u­lar meet­ings of the Jowett Car Club in var­i­ous Javelin saloon cars.

She was the widow of Robert (Bob) for the last three and a half years and leaves her son Ian, daugh­ter-in-law Juli­ette and grand­chil­dren Jes­sica and Dan.

The funeral ser­vice, con­ducted by min­is­ter Ken Howles, will be held on Mon­day, Novem­ber 13 at 1.40pm at Ac­cring­ton Cre­ma­to­rium, Burn­ley Road.

Fam­ily flow­ers only with do­na­tions to Red Cross.
