MRS Doris Mercer, of Henley House, Whalley Road, died on Tuesday, October 24, at Henley House, peacefully nursed by Nesta, aged 91.

She originally trained as a silk weaver at Broadoak Mills.

After bringing up a family and recovering from serious illness, she worked part time for a number of local businesses. She had a long period with Lucas Rists Wires and Cables, a brief spell with Holland’s Pies, finally ending as a cleaner at a printing company in Church.

After retirement she helped to run a knitting club with her best friend at the Baptist Church, Whalley Road, that exhibited and also raised money for local charities.

She enjoyed swimming to keep fit. She was a keen machine knitter, originally sharing a machine with her sister-in-law, eventually with her own machines, she made many of her own clothes.

She accompanie­d her husband to regular meetings of the Jowett Car Club in various Javelin saloon cars.

She was the widow of Robert (Bob) for the last three and a half years and leaves her son Ian, daughter-in-law Juliette and grandchild­ren Jessica and Dan.

The funeral service, conducted by minister Ken Howles, will be held on Monday, November 13 at 1.40pm at Accrington Crematoriu­m, Burnley Road.

Family flowers only with donations to Red Cross.
