Sickening defeat by old enemy

-

KATERINA LEE’S CLARETS VIEW

I CAN’T understand how every single time we play Arsenal it becomes a more loathsome affair than the last.

They manage to rob us blind every time we play them and if anything this occurrence was more sickening than that handballed, offside goal last season at Turf Moor, and probably more sickening than Sanchez’s 98th minute penalty at the Emirates.

This time this game was ours for the taking – we had them in our back pockets throughout the game. Corner after corner, chance after chance, Matt Lowton dominating that left wing, our back four solid as a rock, not that they were rattled too much in the first half.

Brady played a blinder, Defour ran the midfield, Gudmunsson deservedly man of the match, creating these wonderful chances.

Yes, we should’ve capitalised on it when we had the chance, but once again it was a case of terrible, terrible refereeing and whingeing opposition that led to the softest penalty perhaps of the weekend.

I knew we’d give them a good go, we all knew we’d have problems with Lee Mason and we obviously expected Sanchez to try anything to get a goal, but I can honestly say at half time I didn’t expect to lose.

It had to be in the last minute, as per usual. And it had to be that man, of course. I don’t think sickening is even the right word to cover the feeling of disdain all clarets had after the match.

Not just Burnley fans, football fans the country over were willing us over the line for the fantastic football we were displaying against a side that, on paper, should have been dominating the game from the whistle.

The only redeeming fact about this loss is that we still remain seventh in the table.

Still only a few points shy of a champions league place and given the next run of games we have, surely it’s going to continue to go our way.

Let’s face it, we have a tough Christmas period and if we can get a few more wins we can go into a busy period with a good few points behind us.

I can safely say that the bitter weekend won’t deter the squad from putting in their best efforts, as they always do.

We play the way we played in the first half against Arsenal every game until the end of the season, and we won’t be having too many problems, rest assured.
