AN Accrington school has been recognised for its involvement in environmentally friendly activities.
St Anne’s and St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Accrington received a platinum award from the Woodland Trust for plating trees, reducing carbon emissions, visiting a local woodland and being woodland ambassadors.
The Green Tree Schools initiative, to which more than 7,000 schools have signed up since it was launched in 2008, offers the opportunity to bring the outdoors, wildlife and green issues into the classroom.
Schools win awards for participating in green activities, both in and out of the classroom.
At St Anne’s and St Joseph’s, pupils have had a picnic with a tree, created a woodland nature trail, taken photographs of what they have seen in the woods, created a piece of art based on this and joined in with other Woodland Trust activities.
Karen Letten, Woodland Trust schools communications manager, said: “The scheme promotes a range of opportunities, each designed to stimulate a child’s imagination and sustain their interest in woods and trees.
“The achievements of the school are recognised through an awards scheme in which they receive points for taking part in activities.
“As they reach milestones within the project, they will receive bronze, silver - and at gold an attractive wooden plaque which acknowledges this environmental accolade.
“Only a handful of schools have moved on to achieve platinum, making this a huge accomplishment for the school.”
