‘We need to take the positives as we’re not going to build on negatives’

ACCRINGTON Stanley had a disappointing Boxing Day after they suffered a defeat against Carlisle United at Brunton Park.

Goals from Jamie Devitt, Shaun Miller and Danny Grainer earned Carlisle the win, with Billy Kee scoring from the penalty spot for Stanley just after the break.

Accrington manager John Coleman was disappointed with the loss, and admits that his side need to turn things around quickly.

“We’re in a rut at the moment. We conceded with their first chance which was disappointing, as we set the stall out to defend better as a unit,” he said.

“We huffed and puffed in the first half and were presented with a golden opportunity just after halftime.

“In the second half we then took the game too them and in the next half hour I think we shaded it and looked more threatening, but then they score another goal and it changes the game and we fell apart after that.

“It’s frustrating as for their third goal we then gave them about four chances for it.

“Football is a psychological game and we’ve got to work hard as that’s the only way out of it.

“We need to take the positives as we’re not going to build on negatives. Kayden Jackson worked hard, but we just need more composure in front of goal.”

It didn’t take Carlisle long to take the lead in the match, with Devitt getting the opening goal when he got on the end of a pass from Hallam Hope before slotting the ball past Aaron Chapman. down Jackson in the area, allowing Kee to score the spot-kick.

The Reds had a good period from that point onwards, but they couldn’t find another goal, and Carlisle made them pay when they regained the lead in the 78th minute.

It came in spectacular fashion, as Miller hit a volley past Chapman and into the back of the net to make it 2-1.

They then got their third a few minutes later, as Grainger netted to wrap up the win and condemn Stanley to defeat.

Young Stanley defender Zehn Mohammed has joined Ramsbottom United on a short-term youth loan deal. The 19-year-old, who signed his first professional deal back in May, joins the EvoStik Division One side as he looks to gain more first team experience.
