SWAN dies after being shot in the head with air rifle on canal. Another swan was also left injured during the attack in Clayton-le-Moors (website, December 29) Lorren Hall: To be fair... even if they do catch them what are they actually gonna get as punishment? A telling off and a slap on the wrist... it’s absolutely shocking. Beyond understandable. Zoë Louise Moores: Swans are protected by the queen so hopefully they will get more than just a slap on the wrist. Fingers crossed. The queen takes ownership for any unmarked mute swans, like these two that have lived on the canal for years. It’s a criminal offence to injure or kill a swan. It’s not just animal cruelty. So hopefully they will face punishment. I really hope they do, I used to love walking along the canal and seeing them with their beautiful cygnets every year. Gayle Knight: I do not understand the mentality. It hurts my heart to see this. Lorraine Bradley: Me too despicable! Can never understand why people do such horrible things makes me very sad. Anne Marie Skellern: Disgusting things like this will carry on happening. There is no fit punishment or justice in this country any more! So wrong and so sad. Baz Almond: Right well l’m putting up the first £100 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of this low life anyone want to add to this. Maybe this will help! Rebecka Southworth: How disgusting and pointless! I will miss these two on my regular canal walk. So very sad. I hope the murderer is found and punished soon. Barbara Barbi Whittaker: Shocking. Can’t find any other words to express my distress at the poor swans & the type of people, that we have living in our community that think this is acceptable. Lesley Wharton: Apart from the terrible tragedy in Rishton on Boxing Day this terrible act knocked me sick. Whoever you are you ought to be thoroughly ashamed of yourself.
