Comeback specialists do it again

- STANLEY......................... 3 STEVENAGE................... 2

SKY BET LEAGUE TWO SHELDAN KEAY

ACCRINGTON Stanley made yet another incredible comeback as they came from 2-0 down for the second home game running to defeat Stevenage at the Wham Stadium.

Stevenage initially had a two-goal lead after strikes from Matthew Godden and Mark McKee, but Sean McConville scored twice, and Billy Kee also netted to earn the Reds the victory.

Accrington struggled to get going in the early stages of the match, and their slow start came back to haunt them as Stevenage made the breakthrough with the first shot of the game.

Godden was able to create space for himself on the edge of the box before firing past Stanley goalkeeper Aaron Chapman and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Accrington then had chances of their own as they tried to get back in the match, with Jimmy Dunne having an effort blocked before Kayden Jackson forced a save out of Stevenage goalkeeper Tom King.

Despite Stanley’s chances, Stevenage were able to double their lead on 38 minutes. The visitors capitalised on a mistake by Accrington and McKee shot into the far corner to make it 2-0.

It looked like the Reds would trail 2-0 at the break, but they were handed a lifeline when McConville scored in the third minute of stoppage time. His free-kick flew past King and into the net to make it 2-1 at half-time.

Despite scoring before just before the interval, Accrington struggled to carry that momentum into the second half, with Stevenage instead dictating play.

Chapman was needed to prevent the away side from restoring their two-goal lead, as he made a good save to deny Jonathan Smith on the hour mark.

Accrington eventually found their feet again and they finally got back on level terms after 70 minutes. McConville turned provider as he played in Kee, with the striker doing the rest by slotting the ball into the far corner to register his 18th goal of the campaign.

Stanley were determined to repeat their heroics from their previous home game by completing the turnaround, and remarkably they managed to do just that on 78 minutes.

The Stevenage defence were caught napping and Stanley took full advantage as McConville’s deflected shot from the edge of the area found the net, making it 3-2 to the hosts.

Accrington didn’t sit back and were happy to go forward in search of more goals, with Jackson almost sealing the win late on when his attempt was somehow kept out by King.

It didn’t matter in the end, as Stevenage couldn’t find an equaliser.
