TUESDAY 17 TO SATURDAY 21 APRIL Proof Theatre Royal, Ramsbottom:

As mental illness continues to afflict lives, and social stigmas still stand their ground, Summerseat Players’ latest production couldn’t be more topical: David Auburn’s Proof. First performed off Broadway in 2000, David Auburn’s modern classic was initially showered with rave reviews and accolades – including a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. In 2005, it was also adapted into an acclaimed film, starring Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow. Now, thanks to local am dram heroes the Summerseat Players, Auburn’s masterpiece is being revived on the theatre stage, with a five-night run at Ramsbottom’s Theatre Royal. The play centres on Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius in his 50s and professor at the University of Chicago, and her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness. Over a long weekend, the discovery of a mysterious notebook draws Catherine into the most difficult problem of all. How much of her father’s madness — or genius — will she inherit?
