YOUR ARTIST
What do you do for a living?:
I work as an artist and part-time gallery assistant at The Haworth Art Gallery, Accrington
What prompted you to become an artist:
There’s no one thing. From as long as I can remember I’ve been a creative, and have always worked in a creative environment.
What is the best thing about Accrington?:
I’m loving the children of Accrington. I run an arts drop in for children at The Haworth Art Gallery every other Sunday. It’s always full and bursting with individual interpretations of the day’s theme. Incredibly stimulating.
What is the worst thing about Accrington?:
As with many beautiful towns in the UK, watching the deterioration of its town centre is upsetting. But there is a resilience here in Accrington... lots of community spirit and determination.
Where is your favourite place in Accrington:
My favourite place has to be my artist’s studio in the motor home. It’s my little piece of heaven here at The Haworth Art Gallery, and I had to come all the way from London to find it.
How long have you been an artist:
For as long as I can remember.
What do you enjoy most about it?:
I love the creative process, from start to finish. Starting with the inspiration, to the research, to the sketching out of ideas. From there it’s producing maquette or samples to realising a final piece.
Who are your main artistic influences?:
There are so many from young British artists to modern artists. Most memorable are Grayson Perry, Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, Jean-Michel Basquiat and (from a very early age) Aubrey Beardsley.
What has been your most memorable moment?:
My first exhibition, totally epic and terrifying at the same time
What’s the most challenging part of being an artist?:
There are so very many, we artists can be a bonkers bunch. From artist’s block, financial issues, I could go on. But for me personally it’s getting my work out there, getting it seen and promoted
What is your creative process like?:
I work very organically with my fine arts pieces. I could produce a small diorama to a large installation. Starting with the inspira- tion, the final piece will never end how you first imagined. The art takes on a life of its own, it evolves. And if there is no deadline I could be working on a piece for a very long time. I don’t think an artist really ever finishes a piece, rather concedes to allowing it to begin a new life with someone new.
If you could make a piece of art for anyone who would it be and why?:
I do take on some commissions, but my joy is to make public art and or exhibit. My work will have an underlying narrative or message to get across. I want as many people to experience this as possible.
