Contest wins and a march of unity

THE veterans playing dominoes at Gatty Park were treated to the spectacle of a cross country race.

The annual event from St Christophe­r’s CE Secondary Modern School was held in 1964 with pupils running to win the John Bay butt Shield.

The picture, taken by Garth Dawson, shows winner Raymond Royle, 14, proudly holding the shield.

Supporting him are Sean Fenton, 13, Ian Mills, 14, Stephen Pye, 15 and Robert Hodgson.

Rhyddings CS School drew 1-1 with Little moss School in Ashton in the semi-finals of the Lancashire Schools Football Competitio­n at Peel Park.

The Rhyddings team included M Walmsley, D Ireland, J Marsland, D Foster, M Birtwistle, R Rawlinson, R Kenny, S Done, J Bradshaw, J Mann and H Grout.

Huncoat Colliery’s first aid team won the North Western Divisional senior first aid competitio­n.

Congregati­ons from 10 different churches in Oswaldtwis­tle marched together in a 900-strong procession from New Lane to Mount Pleasant Methodist Church for a united service. It was the first time the churches, representi­ng four different denominati­ons, had shared an evening service.
