RHYDDINGS headteacher defends new school drinks policy (‘School head puts ban on fizzy drinks’, July 6)

Nay Slater: I’m all for it - fizzy pop is one of the worst things you can put in your body, why should a school promote that? Hollie C New: My school banned fizzy drinks, it’s fine we had water and other kinds of drink choices Laura Higson: My kids have one juice and the rest water regardless of if they like it or not. As some have said they’ll drink it even if they don’t like it. I’ve never liked water but I still drink it because I know it’s more healthy that a can. Christine Rawcliffe: When I went to school there were no vending machines, if you wanted a drink you used the drinking fountains in the toilets Morgan Philip Rothwell: Good call. Which parent would choose for their kids to drink fizzy drinks?! Nadia Haq: I don’t see the issue? Water is fine! No such thing as not liking it. I enjoy fizzy pop and other drinks but surely they could have those at home as a treat Maureen Taylor: What if they don’t like water, is it healthier if they go without a drink all day, especially in this heat Carole Bancroft: Nothing like that years back. If you wanted a drink, bathroom it was and mouth under the tap job. Just imagine all those different mouths under one tap lol. Still here to tell the tale. Wayne Roberts: If my kid went to that school they would drink what they want, not what he thinks they should drink, wrong move Mr headmaster. Andrew Mitchell: When I was at school we had milk to drink then a certain milk snatcher stopped it all Neil Mooney: Does this apply to staff as well, no tea or coffee just water? Brittany Taylor: It’s most probably because fizzy pop dehydrates you? Whereas water doesn’t, it’s a bit of common sense really Jennifer Mohammed: My son’s school doesn’t allow sugary/fizzy drinks and it’s no problem.... there’s always the option to get an infuser bottle and put fruit into it if they want some flavour. Kids’ attention spans vary massively depending on how much they have drank. Matt Riley: Will ban fizzy drinks but will serve fried chips and burgers in the school canteens? Hmm Angela Spencer: Perhaps he can supply a water fountain then with chilled water if he doesn’t already. Who wants to drink warm water.... Genevieve Hammer: I agree fizzy drinks are terrible for us and they don’t quench the thirst, they actually make you thirstier and all kids love fizzy pop but it should be limited and surely water is a much better and healthy option for school and is good for the brain and body keeping your child hydrated through the day Amanda D Sutcliffe: These teachers should concentrate more on teaching and the bullying that goes on in schools rather than what drinks are being taken in, hairstyles and being generally picky on uniform. Simon Hunt: Great idea kids, these days should learn what is good for them and what better place for them to learn. Kirsty Barnes: What’s wrong with sugar free flavoured water? It’s still water, this should be allowed. Sue Donlon: Parents should have the sense not to be giving added sugar drinks, meet halfway no added sugar drinks Kelly Chew: Doesn’t like flavoured water but is okay with cordial flavouring water? Sam Clarke: Good move
