WE HAVE LOST SO MUCH

-

I HAVE lived in the Woodnook area of Accrington all my life.

Bit by bit so many of the things we took for granted in the 1950s have gone.

We lost most of our corner shops, for people began to shop in supermarkets.

Nuttall Street Post Office closed down.

The fire station moved to Hyndburn Road.

The police station moved into the town centre on Broadway.

In the old days, I think the police desk was open day and night.

Any worries you could call in at the police desk.

The telephone box in Lloyd Street has been taken away, near Woodnook School.

People used to be able to take stray dogs, have them put down, at the back of the fire station near the police station.

Most people don’t feel bad to see the Dog Destination service put to sleep – pets have a right to life like anyone else.

Now it’s Victoria Hospital Walk-In.

All done in the name of progress or saving money.

Only good thing I can see is Woodnook, I was pleased to see due to the loss of Nuttall Street Post Office, someone had the good sense to put a little post box at the bottom of Lloyd Street, on Nuttall Street.

That was an improvement.

Over the years we have lost so much and all done in the name of improvement or saving money. Cost cutting. You get a bus to Christ Church from town.

There used to be a bus come up Lloyd Street once when I was a kid at school.

You caught it outside the Arcade – Woodnook Bus.

Not to mention the Beeching Cuts and taking the train away that went to Manchester via Baxenden.

Nice to hear of the Todmorden Curve, I have been on a train on it to Manchester.

It’s still a long way round. Adrian Vincent Grady Lemonius Street Accrington
