STUDENTS at Accrington Academy put their baking skills to good use by raising £150 during Cupcake Day.

Year 10 students Georgia Curtis, Holly Simpson, Annie Lyons, Ella Berry and Jack Hilton supported the event organised in support of the Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day.

They also learned about the condition during form time discussions.

Accrington Academy’s head of school Nicola Palmer said: “As part of our commitment to provide our students with an education with character, it’s important for them to have an understanding and appreciation of issues affecting members of the community and to actively support those less fortunate than themselves.

“Once again, our students have risen to the occasion.

“A big ‘well done’ and ‘thank you’ to all involved.”

Year 10 students, above, with their cakes on Cupcake Day THE annual sports day at Mount Carmel High School took place with a programme of activities aimed to engage all pupils.

The PE staff organised sack races, wheelbarrow races, an egg and spoon race, three-legged races and a tug of war as well as more traditional track and field events such as javelin, shot put, long jump and track events.

Staff also took part in events, including the egg and spoon and sack races.

Music was provided throughout the day by a mobile DJ and medals and trophies were presented by headteacher Xavier Bowers to individuals and form and Year group winners.
