Prize pupil poets honoured for war writings

-

PRIZES have been awarded to talented children tasked with writing poems for a special First World War ceremony.

Around 110 students from primary schools in Great Harwood were set the challenge by the town’s Royal British Legion (RBL).

Members Steve Flannery, Sue Flannery and Eddie Bailey will act as standard bearers in Ypres, Belgium, for the largest ever RBL event next month.

They will also lay a wreath at the ceremony and asked for local pupils to write a short poem or slogan for the affixed card.

Amarah Price, from Great Harwood Primary, was named the winner with her card using the word ‘Praise’ to spell out the phrase ‘Poppies Represent Arrods Immortal Soldiers Everywhere’.

Dary Kent and Simon Kingsworth of St Wulstan’s RC School and Abigail Parkinson of St Bartholomew’s Primary finished as runners-up.

Jon Metcalfe, chairman of the Great Harwood RBL branch, said: “We were again absolutely delighted at the interest shown and the high levels of work and effort.

“I would like to thank all the teachers and pupils and our member Patrick Mcginley for organising this competition.” A MAN wearing a balaclava tried to force open a McDonalds drive-thru window using a crowbar.

Police were called to the restaurant in Rising Bridge at around 4.30am on Friday, July 20, after the offender was disturbed by staff.

Officers later spotted the vehicle described as being involved in the incident and a ‘pursuit ensued’. The vehicle was found abandoned on Rock Street in Baxenden.

A 20-year-old man from Accrington was arrested on suspicion of burglary, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.
