TALENTED pupils have been honoured at an annual school awards evening.
Top achievers in Years 7 to 9 at Mount Carmel High School in Accrington were presented with subject trophies by former pupil Ian Bagshaw, based on their attitude to learning and achievement.
‘Role model’ students were also celebrated for their politeness, punctuality, helpfulness, organisation and dedication.
Five students – Maddie Boros-Kemp, Fallon Clark, Charlie Hooper, Natacha Ireland and William Procter – were nominated for The Logan Wood Trophy in memory of the former pupil.
Year 7 student Fallon Clark was named the winner and her form tutor Mrs Bowers said: “Fallon is extremely well mannered, CHILDREN at St Peter’s CE Primary School in Accrington planned, designed and made cars driven by gravity.
As part of their design and technology classes, pupils in Year 6 at the Cartmel Avenue school spent focused, committed and always enthusiastic, she fully deserves this award.”
The Duke of Edinburgh Trophy was presented to Alex Lund.
A school spokesperson said: “She performed admirably on the expedition and is a natural leader. She completed all the other sections of the award to a high standard and has been an excellent representative of the school and role model in the community.” two days planning the motorless vehicles, known as gravity or soapbox cars, which are simply given a push and then pulled by gravity to the finishing line.
The children were given a brief as to which materials they could use and came up with their own team name and logo.
They raced their cars across the school hall, with Lightening Cat coming in first, travelling a distance of 13 metres 37 centimetres.
The winners and runners-up received a prize from former governor Peter Hodkinson, who arranged the project.
Thanks to sponsorship from John Dewhurst, of Edward Dewhurst Ltd in Preston, the class will now be able to visit the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
