from Mount Carmel High School’s partner schools at an awards evening.

The Next Steps event, held at the high school and hosted by Year 7 achievement co-ordinator Emma Lowe and design technology curriculum leader Dale Thompson, began with an interactive show called Gross Science, performed by education outreach team Eureka.

The functions of the human body were explained in detail, delighting pupils and parents alike.

Refreshments were served by members of Mount Carmel Parent Teacher and Friends Association, then awards were given to pupils by headteacher Xavier Bowers.

Certificates and badges were presented for many of the activities completed and visits made during the academic year, including four inter-primary quizzes – Mad 4 Maths, Computing Challenge, Excited for English and Crazy for Science.

The British Science Association Superstar Awards were presented to 80 pupils and special thanks was given to six primary school pupils who gave up time to rehearse and play oompa loompas in a production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Drama teacher Jo Bell said “I was incredibly impressed with the six primary school pupils who played oompah loompas, as they attended many rehearsals after school, promoted the show at the Oswaldtwistle Carnival and just fitted into life at Mount Carmel.

“I am going to miss them being around and wish they could stay.”

To finish the evening, a free raffle was held and educational games were given as prizes to the primary school pupils by students from Mount Carmel.
