Exit won’t faze Coley

ACCRINGTON Stanley manager John Coleman insists he won’t get too low about the result despite his side suffering a 6-1 defeat to Mansfield Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

The Reds were heavily beaten at the One Call Stadium, meaning they were knocked out of the competition at the first round stage.

While it may have been a frustrating evening for Accrington, Coleman doesn’t plan on worrying too much about the result and is already focusing on this weekend’s match with Charlton.

“We’ve got a massive game on Saturday against Charlton and that’s where my focus is. There will be a lot of ups and downs this season. I didn’t get too high after the win on Saturday and I won’t get too low from Tuesday’s result,” he said.

“I don’t like getting beat, certainly not 6-1, but it’s a cup tie. It doesn’t make a difference if you lose 6-1 or 1-0, you’re still out.

“I’ve got to give Mans- field every credit, they flew out of the blocks but then we scored against the run of play. There were a lot of things that went on and conspired against us in the game. The first penalty I’ve got no problem with but then the next two goals were very fortunate for them.

“The second goal was a penalty that the referee didn’t think was but then the linesman overruled him, and then there was a foul for the third goal, but we still should defend that better.

“We can’t take anything away from Mansfield though, they were excellent and were the better side. They got a killer goal at half-time that made it 4-1, because up to that point we were threatening to get back into it.

“I’ve got to thank the fans who came and I feel sorry for them as nobody wants to see the team beaten that heavily. Let’s get one thing straight though, Accrington won’t win this cup and neither will Mansfield.

“It would have been a nice pay day if we made it through to the next round, but our priority is obviously the league.”
