PLEASE HELP ENLIGHTEN ME

-

IN this world obsessed with Brexit and sport there are a number of questions that puzzle me and I wonder if Observer readers could help me.

Firstly, as we keep on about leaving Europe I keep hearing about “losing our sovereignty”. What do they actually mean by this word? I can’t see us losing our Queen (be it Elizabeth or Camilla!), and she is surely only a figurehead anyway.

Whatever the outcome we will still have sterling (at less value!) She will still be on the stamps, even if most of the Post Office is still owned overseas.

Secondly - who are we going to trade with apart from Europe? Unlike anywhere else in the World, 80 per cent of our economy is in services. The only thing we seem to export are manufactured goods owned by foreign companies with the profits going abroad.

Oh and not forgetting our other big export - rubbish (literally!) Lots of it was going to China, but now other countries will take our waste on the pretext of recycling it but dumping most of it in the ocean.

My third poser is a different subject- why is it impossible for people to watch football, or any other sport without alcohol in some form in their hand? Perhaps I am being a kill joy on that one but is it really necessary?

So I look forward to any of your trusty readers enlightening me on any of these points. David Entwistle via email
