YOUR GROUP
What do you do?:
Wood-Sage Outdoor Education, an award-winning outdoor activity provider, based at Bowley Scout Camp in Great Harwood, is starting a Dangerous Dads group for fathers in the East Lancashire area. They will be running really fun activities each month for dads, uncles, step-dads and grandads with children aged 11 and under, both daughters and sons. Co-ordinator Simon Moorhouse explained: ‘Dangerous Dads was set up in Totnes in 2007 as a children’s centre project with the aim of running fun activities that dads and male carers could do together with their children. Over the years they have made apple juice, picked blackberries, made dens, been camping and rock-pooling, done silly science experiments and made pizzas in a wood-fired oven... and lots more.
What is the aim of the group?:
The Dangerous Dads Network supports fathers’ groups across the UK and internationally. Their mission is to help to build stronger communities where fathers and male carers have the chance to become the best dads in the world for their children. By working in partnership with a range of community groups their aim is to provide shared and amazing memorable experiences for fathers and children. The group, as well as strengthening relationships between parents and children, has a positive impact on health and well-being, while offering opportunities to develop learning and new skills, including problemsolving and teamwork skills.
What kind of activities will you be holding?:
Bushcraft, archery, camp cooking, tool work, nature crafts, learning to light a campfire, den-building, navigation and exploring the natural world.
When do you meet?:
The group will meet on the last Sunday of each month. The first event is due to take place on Sunday, September 30, from 10am to 1pm, at Bowley Scout Camp in Great Harwood and will provide a range of activities designed to engage families.
