Capital holiday for catering students

-

STUDENTS from Accrington College of Further Education feature in this week’s Looking Back.

Fifty-six housekeeping and catering course pupils travelled to London for an education holiday in the mid-1970s.

The picture on the top left was taken by Garth Dawson and accompanying them on the trip were Mr P Smith, head of department and lecturers Mr V Maley, Mr L Pyznuick, Miss N Kitching and Mrs C Kay.

Accrington Girls High School pupil Beverley Jean McNamara (below right) became the fourth member of St Augustine’s Guides in Huncoat to receive the Queen’s Guide Award.

The presentation was made during evensong at St Augustine’s Church by Ann Kenyon, president of the Guides’ Association.

Loyola Cubs Paul McCaffery, Shaun Gal- lagher and Mrs Barbara Hargreaves were pictured in the Observer (left) after their headquarters at Hippings Vale Park was damaged by vandals.

The hooligans smashed nine wire protected reinforced glass windows and stole outside wall signs, compasses and books.

Philip Bentley and Jacqueline Mangam were among the first children to enjoy the facilities at the newly opened Elim Playgroup (bottom left).

The group, based on Blackburn Road in Accrington, was run by Mary Del Monaco.

Our final photograph on the bottom left of the page is of Gillian Eborn and Joanne Aspin feeding some of the animals at Rhyddings Park in Oswaldtwistle.
