Home victory

far this season. Wimbledon are now in 19th place after their loss.

The victory ended a sequence of drawn games on home turf for Stanley and Coleman is hoping it proves a watershed result for his team.

“We do play some good football, we make chances and play entertaining stuff and we do show a passion and a character and a fight. You can never fault our players’ work rate,” he told the club’s official website.

“It was a huge relief to take the lead and it’s just a pity we couldn’t build on it in the first half.

“We have got to take each game as it comes and every game we play we expect it to be difficult for different reasons.

“We made a bold state- ment with our team selection and we have got to use what’s available to us to the best of our ability and advantage.

“I couldn’t fault any of our players on the day but I just thought our decision making in the final third as a team was a little awry.” ACCRINGTON Stanley, in partnership with HML Recycling, have announced the club’s second Funfair & Fireworks event at the Wham Stadium on Sunday 4th November 2018.

Gates open at 5pm, with the display starting at 7.45pm, and tickets are on sale now priced at just £4 for adults and concessions and £2 for U16s.

There will be live music on the evening within the McMurrays Haulage and Bowland Brewery FanZone, located in the William Dyer Electrical Stand, between 6pm7.30pm and for one hour after the firework display.

WELL, thank goodness for that. Finally, good people of Accrington, we have a home win in League 1 and all is well at The Crown Ground. We’re sitting pretty in ninth place and are still unbeaten since the opening day.

We needed that badly and as we all know it wasn’t a certainty. This week I’d like to speak about comments made by the management after the win.

John Coleman’s comments in the post-match interview were justified, he said: ‘I don’t know what else we have to do to get more people through the gates’ and you can’t argue with that. This team does deserve more fans watching, others who aren’t as good do get a lot more through the door playing mediocre football that isn’t as eye catching (Luton and Portsmouth, I’m looking at you). But, if I know anything, it’s the mind set of local football fans. This is because I’ve been trying to figure out why they haven’t shown up in bigger number for some time now.

In an ideal world the 60s never happens for Stanley. In a wonderful parallel universe, we stay in business. The rock and roll football boom hits across the country and our gates soar. Stars are born, alliances chosen, and none of our grandparents choose to support Blackburn or Burnley because they have Accrington Stanley to watch in the football league. We find ourselves locked in a 3-way rivalry for East Lancashire dominance, averaging 12,000 home fans and we get to a cup semi-final in 1979. I often sit and ponder this dreamland, I think it sounds fantastic. I think it could well have happened if certain things had played out differently. Alas, they didn’t and we’re creating our own history now but that won’t change peoples 50-year habits.

The club is doing its best to get new fans in and I’m seeing more young faces on the terrace than I’ve ever
