A look back at teams who have triumphed

THE Woodnook Villa football team features in a sports special in Looking Back this week.

The picture (top left) was submitted by Observer reader Peter Ashworth and shows the team in 1968 competing in the Accrington Combination League.

The photo includes: (top row) Hickey, Ashworth, Aspin, Brady, Binns, Allan and (bottom row) Baldwin, Dickinson, Chadwick, Tootle and Smith.

Whinney Hill Reserves lost 2-1 against Accrington North End in the Division Three Championship in 1975 (right).

The team featured: G Williams, M Walsh, D Riley, D Price, R Fielding, B Cucknell, P Cockburn, J Heslop, J Addison, B Haken, B Jackson and G Mowle.

Hollins School fifth year netball team (centre right) won the Hyndburn League for a second successive year in the 1970’s. The first year team also had a good season winning all their league matches.

The winning teams included: (top row fifth year team) Denise Armstrong, Brenda Yardley, Julie Entwistle, captain Jean Buckley, Lesley Green, Denise Longrigg, Kim Bentley (bottom row first year team) Georgina Hadcroft, Mandy Charnley, Beverley Brown, Sonia Jackson, Lynn Aspin, captain Alyson Phizacklea, Jo Hague and Hilary Brown.

The Baxenden Cricket Club second team won the Lawrenson Cup in 1975.

Our final picture (top right) shows the Hippings Vale Methodist Junior School netball team who reached the final of the Junior Schools rally at Rhyddings Secondary School.
