Warrington warm-up for Coley’s boys

-

JOHN Coleman’s Accrington Stanley side were held to a goalless draw by Warrington Town at Cantilever Park.

Stanley’s side for the game was fairly mixed with the club facing Preston North End the following evening.

The game began slowly with the first chance of the game coming when the ball fell to a Trialist, who proceeded to hit his shot wide of the Warrington goal.

Paul Carden’s side Warrington corner lead to Simmonds finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the striker’s effort bounced wide of the goal.

Summer signing Joe Pritchard started showing the Accrington fans what they can expect of him, as he showed exceptional footwork on the edge of the box, before his resulting shot bobbled just wide of the goal.

Just before the half-hour mark, goalkeeper Josef Bursik performed a superb diving save to deny a curling effort from the Warrington frontman.

The second half begin in a similar way as to how the first did, with the majority of play consisting of multiple midfield duels.

Stanley’s first chance after the break came from a scramble in the Warrington penalty area, as the ball fell to Simmonds who’s shot was saved well by the Warrington goalkeeper.

The non-league side then had the ball in the Accrington goal, but it was disallowed with the referee ruling it out for a foul on a Trialist during the build-up.

Erico De Sousa then crossed superbly for Simmonds but the striker could only direct his header straight at the Warrington goalkeeper, who saved comfortably.

Minutes before the end, Simmonds was again involved as he did well to win the ball before leading a counter-attack, but it resulted in Pritchard firing a shot over the crossbar.
