A whole school photo from the 50s

-

A WHOLE school photograph from 65 years ago features in Looking Back this week.

The photo above shows pupils at Paddock House Convent Grammar School in September 1954 and was submitted by Observer reader Rosalind Flannery.

Our next picture shows civil servant Cathy Green who won the Department of Health and Social Security’s North Western beauty queen competition (below right).

The 24-year-old from Clayton-le-Moors was judged the best of 12 contestants before a large audience at Rivington Barn, including Bolton Wanderers stars Mickey Walsh and Neil Whatmore. It was the second successive year that a Hyndburn woman won the title following Accrington’s Janet Sullivan in 1977.

Members of the Church Corinthians FC team who put up a great fight in the 1978 final of the Blackburn Under 14s Youth League Cup, pictured bottom right.

They lost 2-1 to the champions Brooklands.

The line up shows (back row) Sherman Hartley, Ray Evans, Mark Heys, Peter Smith, Mark Growden and Jimmy Whitehead, (front row) Tony Clarke, Mark Kay, Tony Bramley, Mark Mason, (inset) the captain Andrew Turner.

Pictured bottom left are some of the seventeen lads aged from eight to 14 who walked 30 miles from Accrington, through the Ribble Valley and back to raise money for Woodland’s older people’s home in Clayton-le-Moors.

The Saturday afternoon sponsored walk by the members of Football Academy Junior FC raised around £110 and was used to buy something for the residents.

The cheque was handed over at Park View WMC in Clayton-le-Moors.

Our final photo this week shows Accrington Stanley captain Ian Wilcox and Mick McHugh proudly displaying the championship cup with the rest of the squad looking on after clinching the title.

Mick led the side in the absence of injured Wilcox and his deputy John Hubberstey.
