Star pupils score sporting success
FROM girl’s football to under-13’s cricket, Accrington Academy’s sporting prowess has earned it the coveted School Games Silver Mark Award.
Launched in 2012, the School Games Mark is a governmentled award scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the wider community.
Accrington Academy has now seen its commitment to sport rewarded for the 2018/19 academic year, with the Silver Mark recognising its wide range of sporting achievements.
They include: cictory in the Hyndburn Netball Leagues for Years 7, 8 and 9 netball teams; five academy teams representing Hyndburn at the Level 3 Lancashire School Games; Years 7 and 9 taking the titles of Hyndburn Rounders Champions; representing Hyndburn and Ribble Valley in the Lancashire Cross Country Championships; first place at the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Gymnastics Competition for the academy’s A team and third place for the B team; all of the academy’s boys’ football teams qualifying for and playing in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Premier League; the Year 10 football team winning the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Cup and League double; Key Stage 3 Girls’ football team becoming Hyndburn champions in the central venue tournament; the Under 13’s cricket team reaching the last 16 in the Lancashire Cup; and international representation in the Biathlon.
As part of its application to the awards scheme, the Academy was also asked to demonstrate its participation across the areas of competition, workforce and clubs, working closely with Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Partnership, Pioneers ‘79, West Pennines Netball Club, the Youth Sport Trust and Accrington Sport and Leisure.
Susan Tahraoui, Accrington Academy’s head of PE, said: “We are extremely proud of our students for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our various competition successes possible.”
