Police crackdown on problem drivers

ADRIVER who was caught speeding with no seat belt on and a newborn baby in the car was among several motorists stopped in a police crackdown operation.

Officers from the Tactical Operations Unit and the Lancashire Safer Roads Team targeted speeding vehicles in the Stanhill area of Oswaldtwis­tle following complains from local residents.

Several drivers were pulled over for speeding

with some also found to have no insurance or eyesight ‘below the required standard’.

A police spokespers­on said: “Throughout the evening, several drivers were spoken to about their manner of driving. Of particular note, one driver was caught driving at 50mph in a 30mph zone.

“Upon further investigat­ion, officers identified that the driver did not have any insurance to drive the vehicle.

“As a consequenc­e, the driver was summoned to court for the offence of speeding and no insurance. The vehicle was also seized, and the driver was left to find alternativ­e transport home.

“Later, officers stopped a vehicle because of their manner of driving. After speaking to the driver, it became clear that the driver’s eyesight was below the required standard.

“Officers have reported the driver to the DVLA so that the driver can have a medical evaluation concerning his suitabilit­y for driving.”

Officers said another driver was caught travelling at 44mph 30mph zone.

The spokespers­on said: “In addition to this, the driver had no seatbelt on and a newborn baby in the car. The driver has been reported for the offence of speeding and no seatbelt.”

Finally, officers stopped a vehicle for its manner of driving in a built-up residentia­l area.

The driver was issued a section 59 warning meaning if they are caught driving similarly again, their vehicle will be taken away.

The spokespers­on added: “During the evening it was pleasing to see and speak to many residents, who all expressed their concerns for the way in which drivers pass through their village.

“Remember, excessive and inappropri­ate speed is the cause of many road traffic collisions.

“The Lancashire Safer Roads Team will take a robust approach to speeding drivers. We will continuous­ly step up our efforts to catch irresponsi­ble drivers who choose to ignore the speed limits.” in the
