Pool trophies

-

POOL attracted a packed crowd to the Blockage Hotel in Accrington for the pub’s knockout final, pictured top left.

Dave Wilkinson beat Chris Randal-Burge 3-2 to collect a bottle of vodka and the winner’s trophy from landlord Edward Berry.

Photographer Garth Dawson took the picture in 1975 and shows David and Chris with landlord and landlady Eddie and Joyce before the match.

Pictured top right was taken when more than 300 people attended an exhibition explaining the Hyndburn to Burnley section of the proposed M65 motorway at Clayton-le-Moors library.

It featured plans, models and information with North West Road Construction Unit engineers on hand to explain it all to visitors.

Linda Costelloe, 27, became the ‘first lady’ of Accrington and District Junior Chamber of Commerce when the group met at Allspeeds in Clayton-le-Moors in the mid-1970s.

The probation officer was the first female member of the formerly male stronghold and was a former vice-president of the Hartlepool Chamber and chairman of Economic Affairs.

She is pictured (right) with (front row) Mr P L Nicholson and (back row) T Davies, J Taylor, P A Rimmer, H Mitchell and B Greenhalgh.

Girls from Moorhead County High School and boys from St Christopher’s CE High school in Accrington swept the board at the Hyndburn inter-secondary schools swimming gala to win the Duffy Cups.

On the bottom right of the page, organised by the Hyndburn Schools Sports Association, the gala was opened by Mayor Donald McNeil and trophies were presented by Mayoress Eileen McNeil.

The events were judged by officials from Accrington Swimming Club and the diving was judged by Accrington Baths manager Geoffrey Pickles.

Our final photo this week shows Accrington Combination Division One champions Altham, who took a break from their bid to retain the title when they took on Preston Premier League side Bamber Bridge in the Lancashire Amateur Shield.

The team was selected from Roberts, Lee, Wilkinson, Ross, Johnson, Illingworth, Braysford, Stevenson, John Law, Farrington, Biscomb and Cruickshank.
