ROY MABBUTT

MR Raymond Pickering, of Brook Street, Rishton, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, in hospital, aged 77.

In his youth Ray attended St James Infant School and then Bangor Street at Blackburn, before leaving school at the age of 15 and going to work at Donshoe. He has also worked over the years for many building firms. Ray later decided it was time to take the plunge and work for himself doing building and plastering.

Before Ray became less mobile he enjoyed cycling and gardening; he also loved to grow veg and tomatoes down at his allotment (pen). He enjoyed listening to music, watching horse racing on TV and on Thursdays going to Fleetwood with his friend Foxy. He was also a member of Rishton Working Men’s Club and Rishton Con Club, and was very well known throughout the town and the Accrington club scene.

Ray sadly leaves his loving wife Josie and two great sons David and Stephen, he was also a much-loved brother of Maurice and Barry, a dear uncle and cousin of Gordon.

His funeral service will be held at 1.15pm on Tuesday, September 24, at St Peter and St Paul’s Parish Church, Rishton, prior to committal at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

He worked for Holland’s Pies Frozen Foods as a Despatch Manager, and prior to becoming a manager was a long-term fresh pie delivery van driver to all the fish and chip shops in the North West. He was a life-long Burnley football club fan and in his spare time collected Dinky and Corgi model trucks. He was a big war movie fan, especially The Great Escape.

Norman enjoyed going out for meals and loved to visit RNLI stations to collect badges.

Husband of Nicolette, he leaves son Neil and his wife, daughter Pat, four step-sons Nick, Francis, Tom and John along with their wives, brother Stuart and his wife Eileen together with numerous grandchild­ren.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, September 27, at Accrington Crematoriu­m, followed by a wake at Peel Park.

Funeral director: Hyndburn Funeral Services, Queens Road, Accrington. MR Roy William Mabbutt, of Kingsway, Church, passed away on Monday, September 9, aged 90.

Born in Northampto­n, he had lived in Accrington since 1958. Roy was a Corporal in the RAF from 1946 to 1951 at RAF Benson in Oxfordshir­e. He also worked at G.E.C. and Allspeeds as a buyer before retiring from Mullards/ Phillips as chief buyer and department head.

An accomplish­ed and talented accordion player, Roy, along with his twin brother Frank, had played all their lives.

He was also an avid reader and collector of WWI and WWII diaries and books. He spent a long and happy retirement travelling in a camper-van with his beloved late wife of 60 years, Jeanne.

Husband of late wife Jeanne, he leaves sons Peter, Anthony and Paul along with their wives Debbie, Jane and Annette. He also leaves grandchild­ren Andrew, Mark, Lyndsey, Rachael, Christophe­r and Ruth together with greatgrand­children and twin brother Frank, his wife Mary and sister Margaret.

A funeral service was due to be held at 2.20pm on Thursday, September 19, at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

DOROTHY HARWOOD

MRS Dorothy Harwood, of Brown Birks Road, Huncoat, Accrington, died on Sunday, September 15, aged 85.

Dorothy worked for a number of years at Howard & Bullough before becoming an accounts clerk for Joseph Arnold. Dorothy loved shopping and holidays, and especially loved visiting the Isle of Man.

Wife of the late Jack, mother to Karina, Grandma to Richard and Patrick and great-grandma to Oscar, Zachary and Adeline.

A Requiem Mass will take place at 10.15am at St Joseph’s RC Church, Accrington, administer­ed by Father Simon Stamp, followed by a committal at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

LINDSAY BIRBECK

THE much-loved and adored mum and best friend of Steven and Sarah, dear daughter of Russell and the late Barbara, loving sister of Daryl and his wife Tracy, wife of Tim and also a cherished auntie, relative and good friend to all who knew her.

Lindsay was the most amazing mum, she doted on her children and always gave her all to ensure that their life was fun and filled with laughter. She loved her work as a teaching assistant at Ightenhill School and she adored being surrounded by the children. She would go above and beyond her role and was always there to create the most amazing props for the school production­s and displays.

Lindsay had a very creative mind and loved to put pencil to paper to create one of her amazing drawings. Family holidays were always looked forward to, Lindsay loved nothing more than setting up camp at Silverdale and getting out to explore the open countrysid­e walking for miles each day, but her favourite holidays were trips to Skiathos where she would relax on her sunbed sipping away on her favourite drink whilst soaking up the sun.

Lindsay was always surrounded by her many friends and loved to spend time putting the world to right with her lifelong bestie ‘Shazbaz’.

Lindsay was a truly selfless lady who always put others first and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

KATHERINE BARNES

SUDDENLY at her beloved home on Monday, September 9, Katherine Margaret Barnes, aged 80, of Great Harwood.

The devoted and loving wife of the late Alan, loved sister of John, dear auntie of Timothy, Sarah, Olivia, Alan, Gary, Andrea, Mark and Karl, Katherine also leaves her loyal and good friend Michael and other relatives and many friends.

Katherine was the ‘Queen of Clayton’ serving the local community for over fifty years with her fresh produce from her shop on Whalley Road. She always had a smile for every customer that came through the door and she never forgot anyone. She was like the local agony aunt and was always had time for a natter. She truly was one of the old school generation who believed it was her role to serve society, with her hardworkin­g ethos Kath never missed a day’s work. Each morning the shop would be open with her fruit and vegetables displayed to perfection ready to serve her loyal customers.

Following a long day in the shop, Katherine would return home to her beloved farm where she would continue to work late in to the evening, whether out in the fields caring for the animals, keeping her beloved home in tip-top condition or in the kitchen cooking up one of her delicious meals or baking one of her legendary cakes. A true Royalist she loved the Royal family and her portrait of HM The Queen had pride of place in her living room.

Katherine was a much-loved pillar of the local community who will be fondly remembered.

A funeral service will take place at 12noon on Wednesday, September 25, at All Saints Church, Clayton-le-Moors followed by interment. All enquiries to Champ Funeral Services.

EDDIE PEARSON

MR Eddie Pearson, of Lancaster Avenue, passed away on Thursday, September 12, aged 77.

He worked at Brickyard Accrington Shopfitter­s, before retiring from Senator at Altham.

He enjoyed cricket, boxing, reading and watching football. He loved rock ‘n’ roll and was known by many as Mr Rock and Roll.

He leaves wife Patricia, together with children Marc, Angela and Traci.

EILEEN JORDAN

MRS Eileen Ann Jordan, of Chatterton Drive, Baxenden, died on Thursday, August 29, at Royal Blackburn Hospital, aged 77.

She was a long-serving market trader in Rochdale. She was an avid fan of Rochdale Hornets Rugby League team. She also loved to walk in the Lake District and Wales.

She leaves husband Peter, son Shane, daughterin-law Deb, step-daughter Louise and step-son Phillip.

She was a devoted grandma and greatgrand­ma, a dear sister to Mary and sister-in-law to Ernie and also a dear auntie.
