‘We stood up to them really well, we defended really well and we made chances’

1 STANLEY........................... 1

ACCRINGTON Stanley had to settle for a point as they conceded a dubious second half penalty and drew away from home with Wycombe Wanderers.

It looked like Stanley were on course for the three points when Dion Charles netted just before the break to give Accrington the lead.

They held onto that advantage until the closing stages, but with just over 15 minutes to go, Nick Freeman scored from the spot to ensure the match finished 1-1.

It means the two teams had to settle for a share of the spoils at Adams Park, and Stanley boss John Coleman felt there were positives and negatives to take from the performance.

“We expected Wycombe to come out in the second half and have a go, we stood up to them really well, we defended really well and we made chances as well, we had the two best chances of the second half,” he said.

“What I am pleased about is how resolute we were defensively, the physical presence we showed when Adebayo Akinfenwa came on because he is always going to be a handful.

“Dimitar Evtimov commanded his box and apart from the penalty he didn’t have a save to make and that is pleasing, that is testament to how well we defended.

“We are disappointed we did not hurt them enough in the second half though. We were wasteful in possession and that is what cost us all three points.”

Accrington were seen as underdogs in the fixture but that didn’t stop them from starting the match extremely well, with Jorchances for the home side, but Stanley goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov did his best to prevent them from finding an equaliser.

It wasn’t to be though, as Wycombe were given a golden opportunity to find the net when they were awarded a dubious penalty on 72 minutes.

Referee Brett Huxtable adjudged there to be a high foot in the area, and subsequently pointed to the spot.

Freeman steped up and smashed home the penalty to make it 1-1.

Stanley almost re-took the lead in the closing stages when Sean McConville forced a good save out of Allsop, but in the end the game finished all square.

The result means that Wycombe remain undefeated at home this season, while Accrington are still in search for their first victory on the road.
