ASURVIVAL plan has been drawn up to save Accrington’s historic market hall as moves are being finalised to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

Fears have been raised for its future after the closure of a number of longserving stalls this year and a projected loss of £190,000.

Council bosses say ‘doing nothing is not an option’ and are considering remodelling the market hall based on the success of Altrincham’s fashionable market.

ASPECIAL vintage funfair and exhibition has been organised to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Accrington Market Hall.

The Grade II listed building was commissioned in 1867 and designed by architect James Francis Doyle who also designed the Royal Insurance Building in Liverpool and Llandudno’s Grand Hotel.

The corner stone was laid by Samuel Dugdale in May 1868 and the doors officially opened in October 1869.

Market staff have been busy collecting historic materials, including posters, plans, Observer newspaper cuttings and photos to create a number of exhibition areas within the Market Hall.

A vintage-themed funfair will be held on Accrington’s Market Square on Saturday, October 26, with a birthday proclamation from the Town Crier at 12 noon.

Hyndburn Mayor June Harrison will then cut a birthday cake inside the Market Hall at 12.45pm.

Council Leader Miles Parkinson OBE said: “Accrington has such a wealth of heritage and the Market Hall is one of the stunning buildings bordering the Town Square in the heart of our town.

“The Market Hall’s 150th anniversary will not only celebrate its proud heritage, but also the traders who offer great local produce and goods combined with friendly personal service.

“So come along to the Market Hall in October to join the celebrations. The Markets team are finalising plans now and we’ll let you know more as things develop.”
