CHURCH AND OSWALDTWISTLE ROTARY

-

FOR several years Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary has hosted an afternoon tea for residents of Springfield Mews in Oswaldtwistle.

This annual event has become a highly anticipated occasion, and this year was no exception.

Entertainment was provided by Barry Ingham and friends, who entertained 25 residents with songs from the musicals, old standards, more modern music and sing along classics.

The buffet of sandwiches and a wide variety of delicious cakes and scones was organised by Rotarian Susan Haworth, assisted by some willing helpers.

The afternoon was very much enjoyed by all those who attended, both residents and Rotarians.

Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary President Lyndon Heap said: “We would very much like to thank Barry Ingham and his group for once again giving up their time to provide an afternoon of great entertainment for the residents of Springfield mews.

“Also, thanks go to Rotary members for all the baking and sandwich making and for serving the buffet.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable event.”

GREAT HARWOOD DISTRICT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT the monthly meeting, Donna McKno from Huncoat gave an interesting talk on her life and her development as an artist who specializes in ‘dotty art’.

She developed a liking for doodling and crafts, made curtains and bean bags and found that these activities helped her with her mental health.

The loss of a close friend impacted her but in 2003 she enrolled at Blackburn to study for a diploma in Art and Design.

Whilst there she discovered and developed dotty art and found that she was able to sell it, selling Christmas cards mainly on craft stalls.

She left the college before the end of the course but found marketing her work difficult.

However, Donna discovered that she could paint dots on anything such as a two-day old foal, an old vacuum cleaner, eggs, milk bottles, wine bottles, Christmas candles and baubles etc. Upcycled ornaments made of glass, wood etc. decorated with dots sold okay.

Items that she has exhibited have received commendations.

Doing dotty art has a therapeutic value, for example helping people with behaviour problems.

Donna has done workshops in care homes and with support groups for mental health patients and vulnerable people as well as the general public.

She has now started selling at craft fairs again.

After the talk she demonstrated her art by painting raised dots of paint on a wine glass using a stick.

Dotty art cards, key rings, fridge magnets and ornaments were available to buy and some examples of larger ornaments were on display.

During the next Women’s Institute monthly meeting Sandra Robinson will give an insight into Doll’s Houses, making and collecting.

This will be at Bank Mill House at 2pm on Wednesday, October 9 when visitors and prospective members will be welcome.

The WI shall be holding its annual coffee morning at Bank Mill House, Great Harwood on Saturday, October 12 from 10am until noon.

There will be various stalls and all are welcome.

ACCRINGTON AND DISTRICT BONSAI SOCIETY

WE are always looking to introduce things which some of our members may not have tried before, this is the case at our next meeting on Tuesday, October 8.

This will be a workshop evening for members to bring along some slate or stone to put a group planting on.

Club member Ray Couldwell will be donating 70 Acer saplings for you to pick from.

If you have never done anything like this before, don’t worry there will be help on hand.

This is when it is great to be a bonsai enthusiast we can continue our hobby inside on dark cold nights.

We start at 7.30pm at Hippings Vale, Community Centre, Owaldtwistle.

If you have an idea and would like the club to feature it next season be sure to let chairman Gavin know.

There will also be a question soon on what members would like to eat at our AGM, don’t forget there are only two more chances to get your Christmas raffle tickets.
