PARTICIPANTS in a tug of war competition and sponsored run feature in this week’s Looking Back.

Sixteen regulars at the Bridge Inn on Henry Street in Church were joined by landlord James Maudsley for the threemile run to the Greyhound Inn, Altham, and collected pint pots en route, (pictured top left).

The event in 1975 raised more than £50 for the Peter Pan Club in Accrington and the winning runner was Sam Jeffries with a time of 15.5 minutes.

In the top right photograph the Queen’s Guide Award was presented to 16-year-old Penny Morgan, a member of the 1st Baxenden St John’s Company.

Penny, who had just left Accrington High School, was also a former member of Cannon Street Brownies and Guides in Accrington.

The presentation was made by former district commissioner Hettie Hyatt and a guider at All Saints Church in Claytonle-Moors.

A new darts and domino league was former in the Hyndburn area in the 1970s, sponsored by Lion Brewery.

Representatives from Lion pubs in the area met at the Palatine Inn, Accrington, and the idea was first suggested by area manager Barry Pitt.

Pictured right, from left to right are Mr N Tattersall, chairman Mr W Costello, Mr N Clements, Barry Pitt, Mr J Gregory and at the front are Mr A Love and secretary Mr D Cross.

Our next photograph (bottom right) shows patrons at the Foxhill Hotel in Oswaldtwistle taking part in a sponsored event in aid of the Peter Pan Club.

The six-strong ‘heavy gang’ carried a one hundred weight bag of cement around a six-mile course and raised more than £160.

They included Peter Braysford, Tom Sisson, Dave Rogan, Ted Feeney, Dave May and Jimmy Turner.

Our final photo this week depicts when one Accrington landlord thought his pub was a cut above the rest - after amassing a collection of 38 swords over the bar.

Jeff Tomlinson, landlord at the Railway Hotel, had collected Gurkha swords, German daggers and African spears since he was 15.

His collection was bolstered by a round-theword trip during his seven years in the Royal Navy.

He is pictured (below) with his wife hold a ceremonial sword with barman Jack Flynn in the background.
