Observer leads the way

-

AN Accrington Carnival procession from half a century ago features in Looking Back this week.

The picture (top left) was taken on Broadway by Garth Dawson in 1969 and shows the procession led by the Accrington Observer minivan and Richard Crossley at the wheel.

Strong determination was the winning factor for Adam Currie who won the Captain’s Golf Day competition at Baxenden Golf Club.

For Adam had been a member for 17 years and during that time had never won a competition.

The picture (top right) shows golfers L Glover, M Dunard, G Heys, W Riley, A Dady, J Parkinson, H Hargreaves, J Fletcher, captain D Tattersall and J Rigg.

On the right, Elaine Ainhworth, 14, from Oswaldtwistle, qualified for the finals of Miss Mini World 1974 while on holiday in Morecambe.

The contest involved using charm, acting ability and initiative and the Accrington High School pupil was also tasked with making a dress out of a newspaper.

Pupils from All Saints School in Clayton-leMoors received a visit from divisional education officer Peter Evans in July 1974 for their annual prize giving ceremony (pictured bottom right).

The Rev J M Taylor acted as chairman and was assisted later by the Rev R Hamblin, the curate at All Saints.

Headteacher Mr J Bradshaw gave a resume of the year’s work before book tokens amounting to £16.50 were given to the prize winners.

Prizes were awarded to pupils in each form and included an art or needlework prize, a sculpture prize and a best effort prize.

Our final photo this week (below) shows beauty consultant Alison Barker visiting the Rishton Ladies Wednesday Club to show how make-up could be expertly applied.

Her guinea pig for the evening was neighbour Phyllis Williams, whose face was thoroughly cleansed and then given ‘the works’ by Alison.

The picture shows Alison applying blusher to Glenda Broad.
