Families enjoy the big lights switch on events
THOUSANDS of revellers flocked to Christmas lights illuminations across Hyndburn.
Events were held in Milnshaw, Church, Great Harwood and Rishton over the last week and featured carol singing from school choirs.
The switch-on in Great Harwood on Friday night was hosted by BBC Radio Lancashire presenter Stephen Lowe and he was joined on stage by pupils from Great Harwood Primary School, St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School, Great Harwood St John’s CE Primary, Our Lady and St Hubert’s and St Wulstan’s.
Peter Holden, chair of the Great Harwood Civic Society, said: “Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Great Harwood big light switch-on a successful event once again. The rain stopping also played its part.
“The town’s primary school choirs, as always, were excellent and their presence ensured that the Town Hall Square was full of parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles etc – well over a thousand on the night.
“Thanks to the volunteers from Hyndburn Council and the various voluntary groups - the Civic Society, the Royal British Legion, the Friends of Memorial Park, the Community Action Group, the Hyndburn U3A - for their stewarding and refreshment duties and to the Rotary Club for providing Santa Claus.”
Residents flocked to Rishton on Saturday for the annual festive market at the rear of the health centre and library.
The Switch-on Rishton group had worked tirelessly for 10 months to bring the Christmas spirit to the village and included more than 30 stalls, children’s rides and an appearance from Father Christmas.
